Chapter 12

Ryan turned on Linda.

“What does ‘use Emily’ mean?”

She didn’t answer.

“Mom.”

Nothing.

His voice cracked.

“What did you promise Vale?”

Linda finally looked at him.

“Control yourself.”

He laughed.

The sound was ugly.

“You told me I was taking over.”

“You could have.”

“You told me Vincent would step back.”

“If you had followed instructions.”

There.

Blame.

Even now.

Ryan stared.

“So this is my fault?”

“You hit him in a hospital.”

“You told me to stop him!”

“I told you not to lose control.”

He looked stunned.

Emily watched silently.

I wondered if she recognized the pattern.

Ryan had used these exact tactics on her.

Now Linda used them on him.

She continued.

“If you had managed your wife properly, none of this would be happening.”

Emily flinched.

Ryan looked at her.

For the first time, shame.

Small.

Not redemption.

Just recognition.

I looked at the burner.

“What is ‘use Emily’?”

Linda said nothing.

I opened older messages.

VALE:

IF VINCENT WON’T MOVE THE EAST CREWS, CREATE MATERNAL CRISIS.

LINDA:

SHE PANICS EASILY.

VALE:

GOOD.

My hands tightened.

“What crisis?”

James took the phone.

Scrolled.

His expression changed.

“Vincent.”

I looked at him.

He hesitated.

“Tell me.”

“They planned to make Emily appear medically unstable.”

Emily went pale.

“How?”

James shook his head.

“Doesn’t matter. It was never done.”

Linda interrupted:

“She needed rest.”

I turned.

Emily whispered:

“You were going to do to me what you did to Noah.”

Silence.

Ryan looked at his mother.

“You said that was off the table.”

Linda snapped:

“Because you were supposed to succeed first.”

The room went still.

Not denial.

Confirmation.

Emily held Noah tighter.

Emma climbed onto the visitor bench beside her.

Both children pressed into their mother.

Linda looked at them with irritation.

“Oh, please.”

I stared.

“What?”

“She acts like she survived a war.”

Emily looked up.

“No.”

Her voice steadied.

“I survived you.”

That landed.

May you like

Linda’s face hardened.

And I knew the family had finally reached the point where fear no longer belonged to Emily.
