Chapter 7

Julian stared at his wife, his mouth hanging open like a broken hinge. "You... you funded Vance Logistics?"
"Every dime," Eleanor said. "I wanted you to build something. I wanted to see if success would make you into a partner, or if it would reveal the coward hiding beneath the charm. And the moment you saw a bigger check from Genevieve’s father, you sold our marriage for a corporate merger."
"Eleanor, that's not true!" Julian shouted, sweat soaking through his collar, staining the silk of his bow tie. "The merger was for our future! I was going to bring you into the firm! I was going to buy us an estate in Greenwich!"
"You drafted custody forfeiture papers on Thursday, Julian," Eleanor said, reaching into her blazer pocket and pulling out a folded legal document.
She tossed the parchment onto the floor at his feet.
"Prepared by your personal attorney," Eleanor continued, her hazel eyes boring into his soul. "Declaring me an unfit mother due to 'chronic indigence and psychological instability.' You were going to serve me tomorrow morning at breakfast. You were going to have child protective services tear Maya from my arms so Genevieve wouldn't have to look at her during your society wedding."
The guests in the front rows gasped. Several women covered their mouths in disgust; business partners who had shaken Julian’s hand ten minutes earlier stepped back as if he carried the plague.
"Julian... you did that?" Genevieve’s father, Marcus, croaked from the floor. "You told me the mother had agreed to a private cash settlement!"
"Shut up, Marcus!" Julian yelled, losing his mind entirely, his eyes wild and bloodshot. "Everyone in this room would have done the same thing! This is business! You don't let dead weight hold you back when you're reaching for the top!"
"Dead weight?" Arthur Blackwood walked until he stood eighteen inches from Julian’s nose.
The physical difference was crushing. Arthur towered over the younger man, radiating sixty years of uncontested dominance.
"Harrison," Arthur murmured.
"Sir," Harrison stepped up, handing Arthur a leather-bound folder.
"Julian Vance," Arthur read aloud, his voice booming through the silent chandeliers. "As of four minutes ago, the Blackwood Trust has exercised its call options on all primary debt held by Vance Logistics. Total outstanding liability: forty-two million dollars. Due upon demand."
Julian’s knees began to shake violently. "You... you can't call the debt without thirty days' notice! That's a violation of commercial lending statutes!"
"Check Section Nine, Paragraph Four of your loan agreement, Julian," Eleanor said softly. "The clause covering moral turpitude and domestic battery. When your mistress struck my daughter, you defaulted on the contract."
"Defaulted?" Julian whispered, his hands flying to his head. "No... no, no, no! That means... that means I'm bankrupt. I'm ruined!"
"You're not bankrupt yet, Julian," Arthur said, leaning in close, his gray eyes flashing with lethal intent. "Because bankruptcy protects you from creditors. And I have no intention of letting the legal system protect you from me."
From the main double doors of the ballroom, the sound of heavy boots echoed down the corridor.
Four uniformed officers from the New York Police Department, flanked by two detectives in dark suits, strode into the ballroom. At their head walked the District Attorney himself, holding an unsealed warrant in his gloved hand.
Julian turned toward the police, his face lighting up with a sudden, desperate hope. "Officers! Thank God! These people are threatening me! They're extorting my company! Arrest them!"

The District Attorney walked straight past Julian without blinking and stopped directly in front of Eleanor Blackwood.
"Good evening, Director Blackwood," the District Attorney said, bowing his head with absolute respect. "We received your transmission. The warrants have been signed by the presiding judge."
