Chapter 18

The subterranean vault beneath the Blackwood Tower was a brilliant fortress of reinforced concrete and biometric steel, explicitly designed to withstand seismic catastrophes and hostile corporate raids. When the heavy blast doors slid open, Eleanor immediately saw her daughter. Maya was curled up on a plush leather sofa, draped in a warm cashmere blanket, completely oblivious to the empire-shaking warfare that had just concluded upstairs. The five-year-old’s chest rose and fell in a steady, peaceful rhythm. The angry crimson welt on her cheek, where Genevieve had viciously struck her, had finally stopped swelling, though it remained a stark reminder of exactly why Eleanor had burned the world down tonight. Eleanor dropped to her knees beside the sofa, her tailored navy pantsuit grazing the cold floor. She reached out with a trembling hand, gently brushing a stray curl away from Maya’s bruised face. "Mommy?" Maya murmured sleepily, her wide blue eyes fluttering open. "I'm here, baby. I've got you," Eleanor whispered, her voice cracking as a single, hot tear escaped her iron control and rolled down her cheek. She gathered the small girl into her chest, burying her face deeply into Maya’s warm hair. "Is it time to go to the big house with the horses?" Maya asked, rubbing her eyes with the back of her small hand. "Yes, my little sparrow," Arthur said gently, stepping into the vault behind them. The towering patriarch knelt beside his daughter, placing a heavy, comforting hand on Eleanor's shoulder. "We are going to the estate right now. And nobody will ever tell you to hide again." Maya smiled, happily leaning her head against Eleanor’s neck. "The bad lady isn't coming?" "No, sweetheart," Eleanor said, pressing a tender kiss to her daughter's temple. "The bad lady is in a very dark place. She can never hurt you again." Genevieve Sterling was spending the night in a cold county holding cell, weeping over her ruined couture gown, while Julian Vance sat in a federal interrogation room facing decades behind bars. They were nothing but ghosts now. Eleanor stood up in one fluid motion, holding Maya securely against her hip. She looked at her father, the genuine warmth finally returning to her hazel eyes. "Let's go home, Father."
