Chapter 20

The upstate Blackwood estate was a sprawling sanctuary of rolling green pastures and ancient oak trees. Far from the merciless glare of the crystal chandeliers and the vicious vanity of the city, the air here was clean, crisp, and entirely peaceful. Eleanor stood on the wide wrap-around porch, cradling a mug of hot coffee in her hands. The autumn breeze rustled the leaves, carrying the joyful, ringing laughter of a five-year-old girl. Down by the white wooden fences of the paddock, Maya was wearing a tiny equestrian helmet and sturdy boots. She giggled with pure delight as Arthur Blackwood—the terrifying financial titan who liquidated international cartels without raising his pulse—patiently held out a fresh carrot for a massive black stallion. "Keep your hand flat, my little sparrow," Arthur murmured softly, his gray eyes crinkling with rare, unadulterated joy. "Let him come to you." Maya held her hand remarkably steady, and the giant horse gently took the treat, nudging her shoulder playfully. Maya turned and waved excitedly toward the porch. "Look, Mommy! I'm feeding the big horse!" "I see you, baby! You're doing perfectly!" Eleanor called back, a genuine, radiant smile breaking across her sculpted cheekbones. She looked down at her left wrist. The skin was perfectly smooth and unblemished. The frayed red thread—the humble token of her self-imposed exile, the dramatic peasant ritual that Julian had mocked just before his total ruin—was gone forever, discarded on the cold marble floor of a life she no longer had to endure. She had spent five agonizing years playing a housewife on an allowance, desperately hoping to find a man worthy of her trust. Instead, she had found her own limitless strength. She had broken a logistics empire over her knee, imprisoned her abusers, and officially reclaimed her throne, all to protect the little girl currently laughing in the sun. Eleanor took a deep breath of the crisp country air, stepping gracefully off the porch to join her father and her daughter in the pastures. No one would ever lay a hand on them again. The Blackwood reign had truly begun.
