Chapter 9

The tension in the brightly lit ballroom was a physical weight pressing down on the chests of everyone present. The natural, fair rosy skin of the assembled capos and associates had turned a sickly, translucent white. They were witnessing the systematic dismantling of a bloodline, executed with terrifying, surgical precision under the warm golden ambiance of the chandeliers.

Richard knelt on the cold marble, his breathing ragged. He looked up at Elena, the twenty-six-year-old woman he had severely underestimated, realizing too late that she possessed the ruthlessness of a seasoned warlord.

"I acted alone," Richard lied, his American accent slurring through his swollen jaw. "My mother and I... we just wanted to restore the traditional hierarchy. No one else was involved."

Elena let out a slow, dark chuckle that contained absolutely no humor. The sound sent chills down the spines of the men standing nearby.

"You are a coward, Richard," Elena stated flatly, adjusting the heavy linen tablecloth wrapped around her daughter. "And cowards do not act without guarantees. You would never have challenged me publicly unless you believed you had the backing of the majority of the capos in this room."

She slowly lifted her cold, penetrating gaze, sweeping it across the silent, terrified faces of the senior Mafia associates standing along the perimeter of the dance floor.

"Who promised you their loyalty?" Elena demanded, her voice dropping into a lethal, vibrating hum that echoed through the hall. "Who told you that if you humiliated me, they would support your claim to the throne?"

No one spoke. The silence was absolute.

"Elena, please," Eleanor wheezed from across the room, struggling to push herself up onto her elbows from beneath the scattered silk runners. "Do not tear the syndicate apart over this. We have enemies in Chicago who are waiting for us to show weakness!"

"The only weakness in this syndicate is the rot standing in front of me," Elena replied, not even turning her head to look at the fallen matriarch.

She took a slow, deliberate step toward Richard. The polished heel of her shoe clicked menacingly against the marble. She stopped just inches from his kneeling form, her towering, powerful presence completely overwhelming him.

"I am going to ask you one more time, Uncle," Elena whispered softly, her words carrying the heavy weight of an executioner’s blade. "Give me the names of the men who backed you. Give me the names of the traitors sitting at my tables, eating my food, and plotting my downfall."

"If I give you the names, you will kill me anyway," Richard sobbed, genuine tears of despair leaking from his eyes.

"If you do not give me the names," Elena promised, a cold, terrifying smile touching the corners of her lips, "I will ensure that you spend the rest of your remarkably long life begging for a death that I will never grant you."

Richard looked into her eyes and saw the absolute, terrifying truth of her words. The young woman in the gold formal gown was a monster forged in the fires of their own making. He swallowed hard, blood trickling down his chin, and slowly opened his mouth to betray the very men he had conspired with.
