Chapter 1

The ballroom of the Sterling estate was a vision of absolute, uncompromising luxury, illuminated by natural, cinematic lighting that poured from the massive crystal chandeliers above. There was no muddy orange tint to the atmosphere, nor any harsh yellow cast. Instead, a clean, slightly warm golden ambiance brought out the bright, elegant video colors of the room. The polished highlights of the marble floors gleamed brilliantly, reflecting the pristine, clean whites of the table linens. Scattered throughout the vast space were the most influential white American adults of the criminal underworld, their fair, rosy skin glowing under the flawless, luminous light. This was a gathering of power, rich and upscale.
Dominic Cole, a fifty-year-old man who possessed the quiet, terrifying stillness of a longtime capo, stood near the edge of a sweeping velvet staircase. Dressed in a dark three-piece suit with polished leather shoes, Dominic was the keeper of the Sterling private reserve. He watched the crowd with sharp, calculating eyes.
"The eastern shipments are secure, Dominic," a young bodyguard murmured, stepping up beside him. His American accent was crisp and respectful. "But the atmosphere tonight feels volatile. The older families are whispering."
"Let them whisper," Dominic replied, his voice a low, steady rumble. "Whispers are the currency of cowards. Elena controls the Sterling organization. She controls the family fortune. That is the only fact that matters in this room tonight."
"Richard has been drinking heavily," the bodyguard noted, nodding toward the center of the ballroom.
Dominic’s gaze shifted to Richard Sterling. At forty-three years old, Richard was a senior Mafia associate and a man entirely consumed by his own bitter ambition. He wore a tailored black tuxedo, a family pin resting on his lapel, and a luxury wristwatch that caught the bright chandelier light. He was speaking animatedly with his mother, Eleanor Sterling, the sixty-seven-year-old former matriarch of the family. Eleanor wore a stunning emerald formal gown, heavy gold necklaces, and rings that flashed as she gestured dismissively.
"My niece thinks she can parade around as the head of this syndicate while we sit by and applaud," Richard spat, his fair face flushed with anger. "She is twenty-six years old, Mother. It is an insult to my father’s legacy."
"Patience, Richard," Eleanor said smoothly, her tone dripping with venom. "Elena has grown arrogant. She believes the fortune makes her untouchable. But every fortress has a weak point. We simply need to apply the correct pressure."
"What pressure?" Richard demanded, running a hand through his hair. "She has Dominic and half the capos eating out of the palm of her hand. She treats us like obsolete relics."
Eleanor offered a cold, predatory smile. Her rosy cheeks tightened as her eyes scanned the ballroom, eventually landing on a small, fragile figure near the rolling ballroom-decoration cabinet.

"Power is an illusion, Richard," Eleanor whispered, her voice carrying a chilling edge. "It relies on the perception of absolute control. If we demonstrate to this room that she cannot even protect what is hers, the illusion shatters. And the capos will look to a real man to lead them."
Dominic watched the exchange from across the room, his jaw tightening. "Keep your eyes on Richard," Dominic instructed the bodyguard softly. "I do not like the way they are looking at the child."
