Chapter 7

The aftermath of the violence left the grand ballroom in a state of suspended animation. The bright, luxurious indoor lighting highlighted the surreal, chaotic wreckage—the shattered champagne tower on one side of the room, and the overturned decoration cabinet on the other. The floor was a battlefield of spilled silk runners, crushed centerpiece boxes, and rolling silver ice buckets.

Elena stood in the exact center of the devastation, breathing slowly and evenly. Her elegant gold formal gown was miraculously intact, save for a few drops of water near the hem. She looked like a terrifying, vengeful goddess, bathed in the slightly warm golden ambiance of the chandelier glow.

She slowly walked over to where Eleanor lay groaning amidst the scattered chair covers.

Elena towered over the broken matriarch. The older woman looked up, her fair, rosy skin pale and bruised, her heavy gold necklaces tangled awkwardly around her throat. Genuine, unadulterated terror finally shone in Eleanor’s eyes as she realized the young woman she had mocked was, in fact, the most dangerous predator in the room.

Elena looked down at Eleanor, her expression entirely devoid of mercy, warmth, or hesitation.

"You thought this was a game of perception," Elena said. Her American accent was quiet, lethal, and echoed with an absolute, terrifying finality that commanded the attention of every single soul in the vast ballroom.

"Elena, please," Eleanor wheezed, clutching her chest. "We are family. Your father would never have allowed this."

"My father is dead," Elena stated coldly, her voice dropping into a register of pure ice. "And you have spent the last five years mistaking my patience for weakness."

She took a slow, deliberate step closer, her high heel crunching audibly onto a crushed centerpiece box.

"You wanted to show this room that I could not protect what is mine," Elena continued, gesturing vaguely toward the terrified, silent crowd of capos and guests. "Instead, you have shown them exactly what happens to anyone who threatens my blood."

Elena turned her head slightly, looking back toward the velvet staircase where three-year-old Lily stood shivering but safe, watching her mother with wide, awe-struck eyes. Elena’s gaze softened for a fraction of a second before hardening back into stone as she looked back down at the defeated matriarch.

"My daughter doesn’t have to serve you anymore," Elena declared, her voice ringing out like a death knell in the bright, luminous room. She paused, letting the silence stretch, ensuring every word carried the weight of absolute law. "And neither... does this family."

The declaration hung heavily in the air. It was a formal, public execution of the old regime. Elena had not just defeated them physically; she had stripped them of their power, their dignity, and their place within the syndicate, all in front of the very people they had tried to impress.

"Dominic," Elena called out, not taking her eyes off Eleanor.

The fifty-year-old capo stepped instantly from the shadows of the crowd, his dark three-piece suit impeccable. "Yes, Boss."

"Lock the doors," Elena commanded. "No one leaves this room until I have finished cleaning house."
