Chapter 9

Leonidas stepped into the cell, his cold, observant eyes fixed on the pathetic figure before him. The damp, metallic smell of the sub-basement clung to the air. Adelia remained just outside the door, watching the exchange, her elegant posture unyielding.

"Do you believe sharing blood grants you immunity from the consequences of treason?" Leonidas asked, his deep voice echoing in the small, concrete room.

"I was misguided!" Domenic sobbed, holding his hands up in a desperate plea. "The northern families manipulated me! They told me you were too weak to hold the city! I never wanted to kill you, I just wanted you to step down for the good of the family!"

"Did you think erasing my identity and locking me in a psychiatric ward were the hallmarks of a concerned relative?" Leonidas inquired, stepping closer, his towering frame casting a long, dark shadow over the kneeling man. "Did you think I would surrender my empire because you forged a wristband?"

"I was wrong!" Domenic wept, grasping at the air near Leonidas's polished leather shoes. "Please, spare me! Banish me! I'll leave the country! You'll never see me again!"

Leonidas looked down at his older cousin, completely devoid of empathy. He reached into the inner pocket of his tailored suit jacket and slowly withdrew a heavy, suppressed pistol. The dark metal caught the flickering fluorescent light of the cell.

"Do you truly believe a king can leave a traitor alive and still command respect from the commission?" Leonidas asked softly, stepping back slightly to avoid the grasping hands.

Domenic’s eyes widened in sheer, unadulterated terror as he stared down the barrel of the gun. He looked past Leonidas, his frantic eyes landing on Adelia standing in the doorway.

"You!" Domenic shrieked, pointing a shaking finger at her. "You ruined everything! You are nothing but a servant! A nobody!"

"Is she a servant, Domenic, or is she the woman who will inherit the empire you tried to steal?" Leonidas asked, his voice dropping to a lethal, freezing register.

He didn't wait for his cousin to process the words. Leonidas raised the weapon and fired a single, precise shot. The suppressed pistol made a sharp, deadly thwip sound in the confined space.

Domenic collapsed backward onto the concrete floor, instantly dead.

Leonidas lowered the gun, engaging the safety with a metallic click. He stared at the body for a long moment, the final weight of the betrayal lifting from his broad shoulders. The coup was officially crushed in blood. The throne was secure.

He turned away from the cell and walked back out into the corridor, slipping the weapon back into his jacket. He looked at Adelia, searching her expressive eyes for any sign of horror or regret. She had just witnessed an execution at his hand.

"Are you harmed by the truth of what I am, Adelia?" Leonidas asked gently, stepping closer to her in the dim light.

"I always knew what you were, Leonidas," Adelia whispered, reaching out to gently touch the side of his face. "I am not afraid of the dark, not as long as I am with you."

Leonidas’s cold eyes softened completely. He pulled her against his chest, a heavy anchor in the uncertain world they were about to navigate together.

"Shall we leave this darkness behind us, then?" Leonidas asked, offering her his arm.

May you like

"I am ready," Adelia answered, taking his arm firmly.

They ascended the stairs, leaving the violence in the cellar, and stepped back into the bright, cinematic light of the main foyer. The mansion was quiet, the immediate threats neutralized, but the echoes of the week's violence were merely the opening notes of a much larger symphony.
