Chapter 8

The question hung heavy in the warm, elegant light of the master suite. The line between mafia boss and housemaid had been irrevocably shattered, leaving only a man asking a woman to share his dangerous, chaotic world.
"I will," Adelia promised, the vow sealing her fate to the mafia boss forever.
Leonidas smiled, a faint, genuine expression that erased the coldness from his face entirely. He pulled her gently down, and Adelia leaned forward, resting her forehead against his shoulder, mindful of his incisions. He wrapped his arm around her, burying his face in her dark hair, finding a moment of absolute peace amidst the impending storm.
For the next three days, the master suite became a command center. Leonidas refused to leave his bed, but he demanded his secure phone and daily briefings from Marcus. The northern syndicate had indeed retaliated, staging small, disorganized hits on Ashcombe territories, testing the waters to see if the rumors of the boss's incapacitation were true.
Adelia remained constantly by his side. She changed his bandages, managed his schedule, and acted as a fierce gatekeeper, refusing entry to any capo she didn't explicitly trust.
On the evening of the fourth day, Leonidas was sitting up in bed, looking over a stack of territorial maps. He looked much stronger, the color having fully returned to his fair, rosy skin. The neat stubble on his jawline was sharp, his dark hair slicked back perfectly.
Adelia walked into the room carrying a silver tray with a fresh pot of coffee. She wore a tailored black skirt and a white silk blouse, having discarded the formal maid's uniform at Leonidas's explicit request.
"The perimeter guards reported movement near the eastern docks, sir," Adelia said smoothly, setting the tray down. "Marcus is deploying a tactical team to intercept."
"Are they still trying to push that border?" Leonidas asked, his cold, observant eyes scanning the map. "They are remarkably persistent for a dying syndicate."
"They are desperate," Adelia noted, pouring him a cup of black coffee.
Leonidas looked up at her, profound admiration shining in his eyes. She had adapted to his world with terrifying speed, possessing an innate strategic mind that rivaled his oldest advisers.
"Are you ready for the final move, Adelia?" Leonidas asked quietly.
"What move is that?" she asked, handing him the cup.
"Do you think I can allow Domenic to sit comfortably in my basement forever?" Leonidas inquired, his voice dropping to a lethal register. "The commission meets tomorrow. They need to see that the head of the Ashcombe family is not only alive, but absolute in his judgment."
Adelia swallowed hard. She knew what he meant. "Will you be the one to do it?"
"Does a king outsource his justice?" Leonidas replied, setting the coffee down and pushing the maps aside.
He slowly swung his legs over the side of the bed. It was the first time he had attempted to stand since the hospital.
"Wait, let me help you," Adelia panicked, rushing forward to support him.
"I have to do this, Adelia," Leonidas grunted, waving her off gently. He planted his feet on the thick carpet and pushed himself upward. His abdominal muscles screamed in protest, but his sheer, terrifying willpower forced his body to obey.
He stood tall, his broad shoulders squared, towering over her. He took a slow, agonizing step forward, and then another.
"You're standing," Adelia whispered, her expressive eyes wide with awe.
"Did you think a few incisions could keep me down forever?" Leonidas asked, a dark, triumphant smile crossing his sharp jawline. "Bring me a suit."
An hour later, Leonidas stepped out of the master suite. He wore a fresh, tailored dark three-piece suit that hid the bandages perfectly. He moved slowly, favoring his core, but his posture projected absolute, terrifying dominance.
Adelia walked beside him, her heart racing as they descended the sweeping marble staircase toward the sub-basement. Marcus and two heavily armed enforcers were waiting at the bottom.
"Is he ready?" Leonidas asked quietly.
"He's been begging for a priest since yesterday, Boss," Marcus grunted, pulling a heavy ring of keys from his belt.
Marcus unlocked the heavy steel door with a loud, metallic clank and pulled it open.

Domenic Ashcombe was huddled on a crude metal cot in the corner of the small, concrete cell. The expensive dark suit he had worn at the hospital was ruined, stained with dirt and sweat. He looked up, his face pale and haggard, the arrogance completely stripped away by the reality of his impending death.
"Leonidas," Domenic gasped, scrambling off the cot and falling to his knees on the cold floor. "Please. I'm your cousin. We share blood. You can't do this."
