Chapter 3

The silence that followed Adelia’s sudden, violent intervention was profound, a heavy vacuum waiting to be filled by the inevitable chaos. The elegant piano music playing softly in the corner of the atrium seemed deafening. Domenic was hunched sideways, his face contorted in pain and sheer, unadulterated shock as he stared at the young housemaid who had just crippled his hand.

Adelia instantly released her grip on his wrist, her chest heaving against her fitted black uniform. She didn't press the attack; she didn't look at the heavily armed bodyguards. She immediately turned her back on the threat and returned directly to Leonidas.

Her hands were shaking violently, betraying the sheer terror of what she had just done. She reached behind him, retrieving a soft, folded hospital blanket from the back of the chair. With incredible gentleness, she tucked the blanket firmly behind his lower back, carefully easing his slumped, drugged posture upright.

"I saw him change it while you were unconscious," Adelia whispered, her voice shaking uncontrollably as she met his dark, hooded eyes. "I tried to stop him, but the guards locked me out of the room."

Hospital staff began to gather rapidly, drawn by the commotion and the sharp cry of pain. The forty donors and relatives slowly stopped their conversations, turning their heads toward the isolated group.

The two bodyguards—the Black American and the white American—hesitated. They were trained to eliminate threats, but drawing weapons in the middle of a brightly lit, crowded hospital atrium filled with prominent citizens was a guaranteed death sentence or life in prison. They hovered awkwardly, unsure of how to proceed with their employer currently doubled over in pain.

Leonidas felt the soft pressure of the blanket aligning his spine. The physical pain of his surgical incisions throbbed intensely, but the cold, calculating machinery of his mind was finally shaking off the fog of the narcotics. The reality of the situation crystalized with terrifying clarity. He was completely surrounded, physically compromised, and his own blood was trying to erase him.

But he was not a man who yielded power quietly.

Leonidas straightened his posture, ignoring the searing pain in his abdomen. The heavily tattooed hands resting on his lap curled into tight fists. He slowly turned his head, his sharp jaw setting into unyielding granite, and looked toward the crowded discharge desk at the far end of the atrium.

Every nearby guest turned toward him, sensing the imminent, explosive shift in power.

"Adelia," Leonidas said. His voice was low, incredibly measured, yet it carried a lethal, vibrating authority that commanded the absolute attention of everyone within earshot.

"Yes, Mr. Ashcombe?" she answered softly, staying incredibly close to him, her hands hovering near his shoulders.

"Who’s being discharged under my name?" Leonidas asked.

The question struck the room with the force of a physical blow. The absolute genius of the inquiry laid bare the depth of the conspiracy. If his wristband had been switched to a John Doe scheduled for psychiatric transport, then someone else had to be wearing the band that said 'Leonidas Ashcombe'. Someone else was currently being wheeled out the front door, surrounded by loyalists, legally transferring his power and his assets into Domenic's waiting hands.

Domenic, recovering his breath, tightened his grip on the thick, leather-bound transfer folder clutched under his arm. His fair skin turned the color of ash as he realized the mafia boss had deduced the entire plot in seconds.

Adelia carefully adjusted the blanket behind Leonidas once more, her hands acting as a fragile, elegant shield against the room. She stayed incredibly close, her heart hammering a frantic rhythm as the entire bright, airy atrium fell absolutely, suffocatingly silent.
