Chapter 1

The private hospital atrium was bathed in a bright, airy luminescence, the cinematic lighting casting a soft, elegant warmth across the pristine white marble and glass architecture. It was an environment designed for healing and discretion, completely free of any heavy, yellow tint. The natural light highlighted the clean whites of the medical uniforms and the fair, rosy skin tones of the forty donors, relatives, and elite staff mingling near the reception desks. Yet, beneath the veneer of sterile luxury and soft piano music, a desperate, silent war was waging for control of a criminal empire.

At the center of the spacious hall, momentarily isolated near a cluster of modern seating, sat Leonidas Ashcombe. The thirty-two-year-old mafia boss was movie-star handsome, radiating a rugged, undeniable masculinity even while confined to a wheelchair. His dark hair was slicked back, and his sharply defined jaw was framed by extremely short, neat stubble. Refined, artistic tattoos marked his neck and hands, a stark contrast to his dark lounge clothing and the open, luxurious robe draped over his shoulders. A heavy family signet ring and a patient wristband adorned his arms. He was recovering from a severe, near-fatal surgery, his movements sluggish as the heavy narcotics still pulsed through his veins.

Standing aggressively over him was Domenic Ashcombe, his forty-three-year-old cousin. Domenic wore an expensive dark suit, a luxury wristwatch flashing as he clutched a thick, patient-transfer folder under his arm.

"Is this the extent of your loyalty, Domenic?" Leonidas asked, his voice low, slightly slurred, but laced with a dark, measured authority. "Public theater in a hospital lobby?"

"You are heavily medicated, Leonidas," Domenic sneered, his American accent thick with condescension. "You aren't fit to make decisions for yourself, let alone the family. The commission agrees with me."

Without warning, Domenic reached down and snatched Leonidas’s mobile phone directly from his lap. With a violent, rough shove, Domenic pushed Leonidas’s broad shoulder back against the upholstery of the wheelchair.

Leonidas grunted softly, his surgical incisions flaring with sharp pain. He reached forward with a tattooed hand to retrieve his phone, but Domenic swiftly pulled it away, holding it out of reach.

"He’s confused," Domenic announced to a passing donor, his voice dripping with contemptuous pity. "The anesthesia... it takes a terrible toll. Ignore whatever he tells you."

Two massive bodyguards—one Black American and one white American, both wearing dark suits and earpieces—moved in perfect synchronization, physically blocking the route toward the reception desk, isolating the mafia boss completely.

From the periphery, moving with quiet, urgent grace, was Adelia Fenmore. The twenty-five-year-old housemaid possessed a slender build and breathtaking, expressive features. Her dark hair was neatly pinned beneath a delicate lace maid headband. She wore a fitted black maid dress, a pristine white apron, white collar and cuffs, and silent flat shoes. She had been assigned to the hospital to tend to his personal needs during recovery.

As she approached the wheelchair, Adelia’s expressive eyes widened. She noticed something glaringly wrong—the plastic clasp on Leonidas’s white patient wristband was partly opened, the edges slightly frayed, completely different from the pristine band the nursing staff had secured that morning.

Adelia did not hesitate. She bypassed the looming bodyguards, her heart hammering against her ribs, and dropped to a crouch beside the wheelchair. Her hands hovered over the armrest, treating him with an incredible, anxious gentleness.

"Sir…" Adelia whispered, her voice trembling slightly, though she kept it incredibly soft so the guards wouldn't hear. "That isn’t the band you wore this morning."

Leonidas slowly turned his head. His dark, heavily hooded eyes locked directly onto her worried, beautiful face, the fog of the medication momentarily parting as the implication of her words struck him.
