Chapter 9

The harvest vote died without me killing it.
Once the capos understood how Marina had built support, nobody wanted the office anymore.
Not because an Elder Steward was necessarily a bad idea.
Because her campaign contaminated it.
Marina blamed me.
“You could separate the proposal from the method.”
“Yes.”
She looked surprised.
“I could.”
“Then why not?”
“Because nobody trusts the proposal right now.”
Her face tightened.
“Because of you.”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“Because of you.”
Important.
She wanted me to rescue the good idea from her bad behavior immediately.
That would have erased consequence.
Maybe one day.
Not now.
Gavin resigned from family association work before I removed him.
That did not absolve him.
But it showed awareness.
He came to see Claire once.
Only after she agreed.
They met in the garden.
I stayed close enough to intervene but far enough not to hear everything.
Later Claire told me the important part.
He said:
“I told myself holding your arms was different from hurting you.”
Her answer:
“It helped her hurt me.”
Simple.
Gavin accepted it.
Good.
Then he admitted something else.
Marina had told him Claire overheard evidence of an affair.
He thought the secret was personal.
Not political.
I stared.
“She lied to him about what you heard.”
Claire nodded.
Why?
To make Gavin react emotionally.
Jealousy.
Loyalty.
Protect his wife from humiliation.
Another layer of manipulation.
I confronted Marina.
She did not deny it.
“You knew he wouldn’t help if you told him the real reason.”
“Yes.”
“So you lied.”
“Yes.”
“Then he helped put Claire under the press.”
Her eyes filled.
“I didn’t think it would go that far.”
I stared.
“You were turning the wheel.”
Silence.
There are moments when people hear themselves clearly only after someone repeats the facts without their intention attached.
Marina sat down.
For the first time since the gala, she looked sick.
Good.
Not punishment.
Recognition.
“I became our father,” she whispered.
I shook my head.
“No.”
She looked up.
“Don’t make this easier.”
I continued.
“You became yourself.”
Her face changed.
“Father does not carry this for you.”
That mattered.

Inheritance can explain a pattern.
It cannot own the choice.
