Chapter 7

Ava asked why Mommy’s dress was torn.

Children do not let adults hide behind policy for long.

We were back at the main estate.

Claire sat on our bed while I helped Ava change out of her party clothes.

“Did Aunt Marina rip it?”

Ava asked.

Claire looked at me.

Her choice.

“Yes,” she said.

“Why?”

“Because I heard something she didn’t want me to hear.”

Ava frowned.

“Secrets?”

“Yes.”

“Bad secrets?”

Claire thought.

“Secrets used to control people.”

Too complex.

Ava looked at me.

“Daddy?”

I tried simpler.

“Aunt Marina listened when people thought they were alone.”

Ava’s eyes widened.

“Like spying?”

Apparently cartoons had educated her.

“Yes.”

“That’s rude.”

I almost laughed.

Claire did.

First laugh since the cellar.

Good.

Then Ava asked:

“Did she listen to me?”

My smile disappeared.

Claire’s did too.

I had not thought of that.

I returned to the archive that night.

There were labels for bedrooms.

Study rooms.

Nursery corridor.

No Ava-specific box.

I still felt sick.

The nursery ornament was one of my father’s carved grapes.

Had it been altered?

I had it checked.

No recorder.

Relief.

Then the technician found something else.

The nursery hallway ornament had been modified once.

Empty now.

Recently emptied.

My jaw tightened.

I confronted Marina.

“Did you record Ava?”

Her answer came immediately.

“No.”

I believed her.

“Then why was equipment there?”

“To hear staff.”

My body became still.

“What staff?”

“Nannies. Tutors. Household security.”

“For what?”

“To know who spoke badly around her.”

She actually believed this helped.

I stared.

“You listened around my daughter to protect her.”

“Yes.”

“Without telling me.”

“Yes.”

“Without telling Claire.”

“Yes.”

Claire walked into the room behind me.

Marina saw her.

My wife spoke first.

“You keep saying protection when you mean access.”

Silence.

“You wanted access to everything.”

Marina looked at her.

“Because people lie.”

Claire nodded.

“Yes.”

That surprised her.

“People lie.”

Then:

“And you decided that meant nobody deserved privacy.”

There it was.

Marina’s worldview stripped clean.

If trust can fail, eliminate the need for trust.

Listen.

Record.

Store.

Remember.

Control.

May you like

Safe.

Except nobody around her had been safe at all.
