Chapter 13

Marina finally explained the wine press.
Not to me.
To Claire.
Claire chose to hear her after three months.
They met in the empty tasting room with the door open.
No hidden devices.
I waited outside.
Later Claire told me.
Marina said she had not planned to use the press.
She saw Claire moving toward the cellar door.
Panicked.
Gavin stopped her.
Then Claire said she had heard the recordings.
Everything accelerated.
Marina needed an answer.
How much?
Which voices?
Did Claire hear the vote plan?
Instead of asking like a human being, Marina reached for fear.
Why?
Because fear had worked for years.
Not physical fear.
Reputation.
Secrets.
Access.
This time she had no box labeled Claire.
No private recording.
No leverage already prepared.
So she created leverage in the moment.
The press.
The wheel.
Ava interrupted before Marina understood what she had become.
Claire asked:
“Would you have stopped?”
Marina cried.
“I think so.”
Wrong answer.
Claire told her.
“You don’t know.”
Marina nodded.
Better.
Then Claire said:
“That is why you stay away from Ava.”
No argument.
Good.
Marina’s apology was specific.
She apologized for grabbing Claire.
For pushing her into the press.
For using pregnancy and physical vulnerability against her.
For frightening Ava.
For secretly recording their home.
For making privacy feel like disloyalty.
No request to return.
That mattered.
Claire did not forgive her.
Not yet.
Also fine.
Marina left.
Before going, she placed one small key on the table.
The cellar-room key.
Claire did not touch it.
Later she asked me to destroy it.
I did.
The door remained.
Unlocked.
