Chapter 6

Gavin had been recorded too.

He did not know.

That discovery changed him.

I found a box labeled GH-12.

He stared.

“No.”

Marina went still.

I looked between them.

Interesting.

“What is this?”

Gavin reached for it.

I stopped him.

“Mine.”

He laughed once without humor.

“You recorded me?”

Marina answered carefully.

“At first.”

“At first?”

He stared at her.

“We’ve been married eleven years.”

“I stopped years ago.”

“How many?”

Silence.

“Marina.”

“Four.”

His face changed.

Seven years of marriage under observation.

I did not play it.

That mattered.

The box remained closed.

Gavin looked at me.

“Aren’t you going to hear what’s inside?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because she already proved the system existed.”

He stared at Marina.

“You listened?”

She said nothing.

That was enough.

His anger became quiet.

More dangerous.

Not violent.

Personal.

“What did you hear?”

Marina folded her arms.

“Things you never told me.”

“That is why they were private.”

Silence.

For the first time, she had no political language to hide behind.

No capos.

No succession.

No family stability.

Just marriage.

One spouse secretly listening to another.

Gavin sat.

“I helped you collect everyone else’s.”

“Yes.”

“I told myself they were dangerous men.”

“Yes.”

“And somehow assumed I wasn’t on the shelf.”

Marina looked away.

There.

The system corrupted even its accomplice.

Because surveillance based on distrust has no natural stopping point.

If secrets are dangerous, everyone becomes dangerous eventually.

Gavin laughed bitterly.

“I held Claire today.”

Claire stiffened.

He looked at her.

“I’m sorry.”

She did not answer.

Good.

He continued.

“I thought I was protecting Marina from losing everything.”

Claire’s voice was quiet.

“So you helped put me under a press.”

“Yes.”

No excuse.

Better.

Then he looked at Marina.

“And you were recording me while I helped protect your secrets.”

Marina whispered:

“I was afraid.”

He stared.

“So was Claire.”

Silence.

That sentence changed the room.

Fear had been Marina’s explanation for seven years.

Now someone placed another person’s fear beside hers.

Equal.

May you like

Not lesser.

She had no answer.
