Chapter 8

The interior of Beatrice’s suite was terrifyingly dark, the bedside lamp having shattered during the explosion. The air was thick with plaster dust and the acrid smell of explosives.
"Mother!" Lucian called out, his deep voice carrying a raw, desperate edge that Della had never heard before.
"Lucian? I am here," a fragile, shaking voice answered from the far corner of the room.
Della rushed forward, navigating the debris, and found the elderly woman huddled behind an overturned velvet armchair. Beatrice’s fair, rosy skin was pale with terror, but she was unharmed.
"I have you, Beatrice. You are safe," Della reassured her, gently helping the older woman to her feet and wrapping a protective arm around her shoulders.
Lucian quickly scanned the room, his weapon sweeping the darkness. He walked over to the shattered window, looking down at the eastern gardens. The bright muzzle flashes of his security team were successfully pushing the remaining Voss mercenaries back toward the breached wall. The assault was breaking.
"Is the perimeter secure, Marcus?" Lucian demanded into his radio earpiece.
"Hostiles are retreating, Boss!" Marcus yelled over the comms. "We have them pinned at the breach! The police are three minutes out. Arthur Voss overplayed his hand."
"Will you ensure none of them escape?" Lucian asked coldly.
"We are mopping them up now, sir."
Lucian turned away from the window, the adrenaline slowly ebbing from his veins, leaving behind a cold, absolute certainty. The Voss syndicate was finished.
He walked back over to where Della was comforting his mother. Beatrice reached out, her trembling hands resting on Lucian’s powerful shoulders.
"You came for me," Beatrice wept softly.
"Would I ever allow them to take you from me again?" Lucian asked, gently kissing his mother's forehead.
He looked at Della. The former housemaid was covered in dust, her elegant ivory blouse ruined, but she was looking up at him with a profound, awestruck adoration. She had just watched him walk through fire to protect his family.
"Are we safe now, Lucian?" Della asked, her voice shaking slightly with the aftermath of the adrenaline.
"Are we not standing together?" Lucian asked softly, his cold, perceptive eyes softening as he looked at her.
He reached out, his tattooed hand gently brushing a loose strand of hair from her delicate cheekbones. The touch was electric, a spark igniting in the quiet, ruined room. Della didn't pull away. She leaned slightly into his hand, her rosy skin warming under his touch.
The engagement dinner had been a disaster, a violent unraveling of lies and deceit. But as Lucian looked down at the woman who had stood beside him in the crossfire, he realized that sometimes, you have to burn the false kingdoms to the ground to find the true queen waiting in the ashes.
"Will you help me take my mother to the secure bunker in the basement?" Lucian asked, his voice returning to its measured, authoritative cadence.
"I will go wherever you need me to go, Lucian," Della replied, her voice steady and resolute, sealing a bond forged in the chaos of the night.
Lucian guided them out of the ruined suite, his powerful masculine presence shielding them as they moved through the opulent, war-torn mansion. The immediate threat was neutralized, but the broader conflict with the Voss syndicate required a final, devastating conclusion. Arthur Voss and Celina had struck first, but they had failed to kill the king.
As they reached the heavy steel doors of the safe room, Lucian paused. He looked back down the long, smoky marble corridor, his mind already calculating the brutal, necessary counter-offensive he would launch by dawn. He tightened his grip on his weapon, his eyes cold and observant.

"Do they truly believe they can survive the storm they have summoned?" Lucian asked the empty hallway.
The question lingered in the dark, unanswered, as the heavy doors sealed shut, leaving the fate of the two warring families hanging entirely in the balance.
