Chapter 10

Six months later, the cascading crystal chandeliers of the grand dining hall cast their soft, elegant warmth over a very different kind of celebration. The carved walnut walls and gilded mirrors reflected a room filled not with sycophantic politicians and treacherous syndicate bosses, but with genuine friends, loyal capos, and the inner circle of the Ashford family.
The white damask tables were adorned with low arrangements of cream roses, identical to the ones from the engagement dinner, but the atmosphere was entirely transformed. The air was filled with genuine laughter, the clinking of sparkling stemware, and the bright, luminous colors of a family at peace.
Lucian Ashford sat at the head of the table. He was still the terrifying, powerful mafia boss to the outside world, his tailored dark three-piece suit and artistic tattoos commanding absolute respect. But as he sat in his own home, the coldness in his perceptive eyes had thawed significantly.
To his right sat Beatrice, her fair, rosy skin glowing with health and happiness. She was laughing openly at a joke told by Marcus, who was seated nearby. The isolation and grief of the past year were completely gone.
To his left sat Della. She was no longer a housemaid in a sophisticated black dress. She wore a stunning, sculpted silk evening gown in a deep, rich shade of burgundy. Her hair was styled in an elegant French twist, and a delicate diamond necklace—a gift from Lucian—sparkled against her collarbone. She radiated a quiet, undeniable authority, respected by every single man and woman in the room not just because she was the boss's partner, but because she had proven her courage under fire.
"The waterfront expansion is proceeding ahead of schedule, Lucian," Marcus reported, raising his glass. "The new legitimate shipping companies are highly profitable. We are completely out of the shadow operations on the east side."
"Have the city inspectors given us any further trouble?" Lucian asked, his deep voice carrying its usual measured pauses.
"None, Boss. They are entirely cooperative."
Lucian nodded, picking up his crystal wine glass. He turned his attention to Della, who was watching him with a soft, knowing smile.
"Are you enjoying the evening, my love?" Lucian asked quietly, the question meant only for her.
"It is perfect, Lucian," Della replied, reaching out to rest her hand over his. The stark contrast of her smooth, fair skin against the dark ink of his tattoos was a beautiful testament to their unlikely union.
"Did you ever imagine we would be sitting here six months ago?" Lucian asked, his thumb gently stroking her knuckles.
"I never imagined I could be this happy," Della answered honestly. She looked around the bright, airy room, taking in the smiling faces of the people she now called family. "We built something beautiful out of the ashes."
"Do you believe the ashes are truly gone?" Lucian asked, a faint, teasing smirk touching the corners of his mouth.
"I believe that as long as we are together, no fire can burn us," Della said, her expressive brows drawing together in absolute certainty.
Lucian leaned forward and pressed a soft, lingering kiss to her lips. The room around them seemed to fade away, leaving only the two of them in the warm golden light.
Suddenly, a loud, echoing crash came from the marble hallway outside the dining room.
The laughter at the table died instantly. Marcus and the other capos immediately reached inside their tailored jackets, their hands resting on their concealed weapons. The atmosphere in the room shifted from joyous celebration to hyper-vigilant tension in a microsecond.
Lucian did not flinch. His powerful shoulders squared, and the cold, lethal predator returned to his eyes. He slowly stood up from the table, his hand dropping to the heavy, customized handgun resting in his shoulder holster.
"Marcus," Lucian said, his voice a low, vibrating rumble that demanded absolute silence. "Is the perimeter secure?"
"The sensors haven't tripped, Boss," Marcus replied, drawing his weapon and moving cautiously toward the carved walnut doors. "But someone is in the house."
Della stood up beside Lucian, her heart hammering against her ribs, but she did not step back. She stood firmly at his shoulder, ready to face whatever new threat had breached their sanctuary.
Lucian looked at the heavy doors, the extremely short stubble on his jawline bristling with anticipation. The peace they had built was fragile, a delicate glass structure balancing on the edge of a violent world.

"Shall we go introduce ourselves to our uninvited guest?" Lucian asked the room.
He didn't wait for an answer. He stepped away from the table, walking slowly toward the doors, ready to plunge back into the darkness to protect the light he had finally found.
