Chapter 4

The opulent, luminous dining room felt as though it had been plunged into a vacuum. The cascading crystal chandeliers continued to cast their soft, elegant warmth, but the atmosphere was now charged with a lethal, invisible electricity. The thirty elite guests remained completely silent, their eyes darting between the mafia boss, the beautiful housemaid, and the glittering fiancée.

Lucian stood perfectly still, his angular face set in a mask of pure, terrifying stone. He looked down at Celina, his cold eyes dissecting her panic. The small tattoo on his neck seemed to pulse with the suppressed, violent rhythm of his heart.

"Have you found the burden of truth too heavy to speak, Celina?" Lucian asked.

His deep voice did not rise in volume, yet it commanded the massive room with inescapable authority. The deliberate pause before the question made it sound less like an inquiry and more like a final judgment.

Celina swallowed hard, a visible, painful gulp in her throat. Her diamond earrings shook violently as her entire body began to tremble. "Lucian, darling, please... you are completely misunderstanding the situation."

"Am I?" Lucian asked, his tone perfectly flat.

"She is an old woman!" Celina cried out, her voice pitching into a hysterical, defensive shrillness. She pointed a manicured finger toward the hallway that led to the guest wing, trying desperately to shift the narrative. "Her mind is going! She forgets things! I was trying to protect you from the burden of her decline! I was doing you a favor!"

"Does protecting a son require telling him his mother refuses his love?" Lucian asked softly.

He didn't wait for an answer. He turned his attention back to Della. The housemaid was still standing close to him, her sophisticated black maid dress immaculate, her posture elegant and unbroken despite the terror radiating from her.

"Della. Does my mother's mind wander?" Lucian asked, his perceptive eyes searching her softly oval face.

"No, sir," Della answered firmly, her American accent clear and resolute. "Her mind is perfectly sharp. She reads every day, and she asks about your business. She only cries when she thinks no one is looking, because she believes you are too busy to see her."

"You lying little rat!" Celina shrieked, taking a furious step toward Della. "I will have you fired! I will have you destroyed!"

"Will you destroy her before or after you leave my property?" Lucian asked, stepping directly into Celina’s path.

He towered over her, his broad shoulders casting a long shadow that eclipsed the warm golden light. Celina stopped dead in her tracks, her fair skin completely white. The intoxicating illusion of her control evaporated instantly under the shadow of his high-bridged nose and observant eyes.

"Lucian... please," Celina stammered, the reality of her situation finally crashing down. "I love you. I just wanted us to be happy. I wanted to be the only woman you needed."

"Can a foundation built on cruelty support a marriage?" Lucian asked.

He reached into the inner pocket of his three-piece suit. "Are you capable of finding your own way to the door, or shall I have my men escort you?"

"My father will not let this stand," Celina warned, a vicious, venomous edge returning to her voice as she realized the engagement was truly over. "He controls the shipping routes. You need this alliance! You have just started a war."

"Have I ever lost one?" Lucian asked quietly.

He turned his back on her, a dismissal more profound than any act of violence. He looked around the room, making brief, deliberate eye contact with several of the most powerful syndicate leaders sitting at the white damask tables.

"Have you all finished your meals?" Lucian asked the room at large.

The guests hastily placed their silver cutlery down, nodding in frantic, terrified unison.

"Then would you kindly see yourselves out of my home?" Lucian asked.

Chairs scraped loudly against the polished marble as thirty guests scrambled to their feet. They did not linger. They did not offer polite farewells. They flooded out of the carved walnut doors, eager to escape the blast radius of the mafia boss's wrath.

Within ninety seconds, the dining room was completely empty, save for Lucian, Celina, and Della.

"Get out," Lucian said to Celina, breaking his rule of questions for the first and only time, the raw, guttural command shaking the very walls of the mansion.

Celina fled, her sculpted silk gown dragging heavily behind her, a ruined symbol of her failed ambition. The heavy doors slammed shut, leaving the bright, airy dining room to settle into a profound, ringing silence.
