Chapter 1

The cascading crystal chandeliers hung like suspended constellations over the grand dining hall of Lucian Ashford’s estate. It was an evening bathed in luminous colors and a soft, elegant warmth, perfectly tailored to reflect the power and wealth of the white American elites gathered beneath the golden glow. Thirty guests—all bearing fair, rosy skin and the distinct, polished cadence of American accents—mingled over white damask tables adorned with gold-rimmed porcelain, polished silver, and sparkling stemware. The bright, airy light illuminated every corner of the room, highlighting the carved walnut walls, gilded mirrors, marble columns, and ivory upholstered chairs. Low arrangements of cream roses offered the only interruption to the clean, architectural lines of the banquet.

At the head table, the epicenter of the room’s gravity, sat Lucian Ashford. At forty-four, he was a mafia boss whose reputation was as cold as his cinematic, masculine beauty. He possessed the striking features of a movie star—broad, powerful shoulders beneath a tailored dark three-piece suit, an angular face with a high-bridged nose, and a sharply defined jawline shadowed by extremely short, neatly trimmed stubble. Thick, slightly wavy hair was swept back naturally, save for a few loose strands that fell carelessly over his forehead. Refined artistic tattoos with generous negative space traced across his hands and fingers, and a small, delicate tattoo peeked above his crisp white collar. A heavy family signet ring and an expensive wristwatch gleamed under the chandeliers.

"The waterfront properties have all been secured, Lucian," murmured a capo seated to his left, leaning in respectfully. "The zoning board proved entirely cooperative."

Lucian did not look at the man. His cold, perceptive eyes surveyed the crowded room. "Have they provided the permits, or merely their assurances?"

"The permits are signed, sir. They will be on your desk in the morning."

Standing to Lucian’s right was Celina Voss, his thirty-two-year-old fiancée. She was a vision of high-society perfection in a sculpted satin evening gown that hugged her slender figure. Diamond earrings caught the warm light, matching the massive engagement ring she wore. She turned from greeting a nearby senator, her face flushed with a triumphant, rosy glow.

"Everyone is simply captivated by the evening, darling," Celina purred, placing a manicured hand lightly on Lucian’s shoulder. "It is the perfect beginning to our life together, don't you agree?"

"Does an evening of calculated politics constitute a life, Celina?" Lucian asked, his deep, low voice vibrating with a measured pause that made the question feel like a velvet-wrapped threat.

Moving silently through the bright, luxurious room was Della Sutton. The twenty-seven-year-old housemaid possessed a beauty that rivaled any woman in the room. Her softly oval face, expressive brows, and delicate cheekbones were framed by hair arranged in an impeccable, braided low bun. Her slender figure and graceful posture were highlighted by a sophisticated black maid dress—a garment featuring a cinched waist, a fitted silhouette, a short A-line skirt, a neatly tied white apron, and pristine white collars and cuffs.

Della approached the head table, holding a silver serving tray. Among the elaborate, gourmet banquet dishes arranged before the mafia boss, she carried something remarkably modest: a small porcelain bowl of homemade chicken-and-dumpling soup.

Her heart hammered against her ribs, her knuckles white as she gripped the tray. The soup was a devastating secret, a direct defiance of the strict orders given by the woman standing right next to the boss.

"Just place it carefully, Della," the head butler had whispered nervously in the kitchen moments before. "Do not draw attention."

Della stepped up beside Lucian’s chair. She gently set a warm bread roll beside his plate. As she did, Lucian lifted his silver spoon and took a small taste of the soup.

The movement was instantaneous. Lucian’s spoon paused in mid-air above the bowl. The complex, gourmet flavors of the banquet vanished from his palate, replaced entirely by a distinctive, deeply familiar taste—a flavor identical to the soup his elderly mother, Beatrice, had cooked throughout his entire childhood.

His cold eyes lifted immediately, sweeping upward to meet Della’s. For a fraction of a second, the lethal, angular mask of the mafia boss softened with raw, undeniable recognition. But as he looked at her, his perceptive gaze caught the violent, nervous trembling in her hands as she gripped the silver serving tray.

"What troubles you so deeply, little bird?" Lucian asked quietly, the question meant only for her ears, though he already suspected the answer.
