Chapter 3

The silence in the grand dining room was a physical, suffocating pressure. The tall candles flickering inside their crystal hurricane holders cast dancing, elongated shadows across the carved walnut walls, mocking the sudden stillness of the elite guests. The bright, luminous colors of the room felt painfully sharp, illuminating the exact moment the lies holding the Ashford empire together began to unravel.

"That is impossible," Celina interrupted, her voice entirely too loud for the hushed room.

She stepped quickly to the side of the table, placing herself physically closer to Lucian, desperate to reclaim the narrative. She looked directly at him, her face a mask of restrained, sympathetic concern that completely contradicted the venom she had just aimed at the housemaid.

"She asked to be left alone, Lucian," Celina said quickly, the words tumbling out in a practiced rhythm. "You know how she has been since your father passed. The grief is overwhelming her. She specifically told me she needed space and could not bear the noise of the main house."

"Do grieving mothers typically cook childhood meals for sons they wish to avoid?" Lucian asked.

His question was devastatingly logical, delivered with the same deep, low cadence that never required shouting to command obedience.

Celina’s sympathetic smile faltered for a microsecond. "Perhaps the maid is confused. Perhaps the chef used an old recipe—"

"Are you calling my palate a liar, Celina, or merely insulting my intelligence?" Lucian asked.

Celina choked on her next word, her fair skin paling to a sickly, translucent white. She opened her mouth to spin another excuse, but the sheer, overwhelming terror radiating from the man standing beside her froze the words in her throat.

Lucian did not look at her. He rose slowly from his ivory upholstered chair, his towering, masculine frame casting a long shadow over the white damask table. The tailored fabric of his dark three-piece suit shifted immaculately over his powerful shoulders. As he stood, he deliberately positioned himself closer to Della, keeping the trembling housemaid tucked safely behind the formidable line of his shoulder. It was a subtle, yet unmistakable declaration of protection that sent a shockwave of confusion and terror through the observing guests. The mafia boss was shielding a servant from his future bride.

"Lucian, what are you doing?" Celina hissed, dropping the sympathetic facade entirely. "You are embarrassing me in front of the senator."

"Does a senator's comfort supersede the truth within my own walls?" Lucian asked, offering his fiancée a slow, knowing look.

It was a gaze that stripped away her sculpted satin gown, her diamonds, and her high-society pedigree, revealing only the cruel, isolating manipulator standing in the luminous light. Celina’s smile tightened into a brittle, defensive line.

Behind Lucian’s broad back, Della squeezed her eyes shut, fighting against the tears threatening to spill down her rosy cheeks. The terror in her chest was a living, breathing thing. She had broken the cardinal rule of the house by bypassing Celina to deliver the soup.

Della opened her eyes and stepped slightly to the side, peering around Lucian’s arm. She ignored the thirty dangerous guests staring at her. She looked directly into Lucian’s cold, perceptive eyes, knowing she had to deliver the final, devastating piece of the truth before Celina could silence her forever.

"She sets your place every night," Della whispered.

Her voice caught softly, painfully, on the word every. The fragile whisper struck the room with the force of a detonating bomb.

Lucian’s heavily tattooed hand, resting near the warm bread roll, became absolutely, terrifyingly still. The revelation hit him with a profound, agonizing weight. His mother had not abandoned him to her grief. She had been waiting for him, night after night, while the woman he was supposed to marry systematically kept them apart.

Lucian slowly turned his eyes away from the housemaid, aiming the full, lethal force of his gaze toward Celina.

Celina’s sympathetic smile disappeared entirely. She drew a sharp, panicked breath, but absolutely no answer came. Her throat was completely paralyzed. Every single guest in the luminous room remained dead silent, entirely paralyzed as they watched the mafia king realize that his fiancée had imprisoned his mother in her own home.
