Chapter 8

The mass exodus from the luxury lounge was swift and silent. The elite guests, eager to escape the suffocating tension and the terrifying reality of the mafia boss's wrath, gathered their coats and hurried out the massive mahogany doors. Within minutes, the sprawling, luminous room was entirely empty, save for the abandoned crystal flutes, the shattered remnants of the glass table, and the two figures standing near the grand piano.
The bright, cinematic lighting cast long shadows across the thick carpet. Evander Langridge stood perfectly still, the adrenaline of the confrontation slowly ebbing from his system, leaving behind a profound, aching exhaustion. He looked at Romilly Hale. The twenty-five-year-old housemaid was standing by the polished wood of the instrument, her delicate hands clutching the pristine white apron of her black maid dress.
He walked slowly toward her, his leather shoes making almost no sound on the floor. He stopped just inches away, his towering, masculine presence completely enveloping her slender frame.
"Are you unharmed, Romilly?" Evander asked, his deep voice softening into a register he reserved only for her.
"I am fine, sir," Romilly whispered, looking up into his dark, intense eyes. "But your hands..."
She reached out, gently hovering her hand over his tattooed knuckles, terrified of crossing the rigid boundaries of their stations. Without asking permission, Evander stepped closer, closing the distance until her hand rested lightly against his chest. He could feel her fingers trembling slightly.
Evander’s breath hitched. He closed his eyes, the simple, tender gesture breaking through the impenetrable armor he had worn all evening. He reached up with his right hand and gently framed her beautiful, expressive face. The artistic ink stood out sharply against her fair skin.
"Do you know how long I have waited for someone to look at me with genuine care, rather than fear or political ambition?" Evander asked, his thumb lightly brushing across her cheekbone.
"You don't have to wait anymore, Evander," Romilly said softly, dropping his formal title in the heavy intimacy of the moment, her eyes shining with quiet, unwavering devotion. "I am here."
"Where did a gentle woman like you learn to throw a man twice your size over your hip?" Evander asked, a faint, incredulous smile touching his lips as the tension finally broke.
Romilly’s cheeks flushed deeply. She lowered her eyes for a brief moment before looking back up at him with a quiet, fierce defiance.
"I grew up in a neighborhood where waiting for a rescue was a luxury we couldn't afford," Romilly said softly. "You learn to protect yourself. And you learn to protect the people who matter to you."
The unspoken weight of her words hung heavily in the bright, luminous air. She had just admitted, in the private aftermath of a mafia coup, that the terrifying boss mattered to her.
"Did you know how incredibly reckless it was to assault an armed man to protect me?" Evander asked, his dark eyes burning with an intense, quiet affection that he no longer tried to hide.
May you like
"I didn't think about it," Romilly whispered, leaning into his warm palm. "I just saw him hurting you, and I couldn't let it happen."
"Do you place so little value on your own life, Romilly, or do you simply possess a courage these men lack entirely?" Evander asked softly, pulling her into a fierce, protective embrace.
