Chapter 2

The heavy, suffocating silence that followed Caspian's audacious act seemed to stretch into eternity. The bright, cinematic lighting of the luxury lounge illuminated the stark contrast between the towering, laughing nightclub manager and the fallen mafia boss who he sought to usurp. Evander Langridge did not shout. He did not immediately scramble to his feet. His stillness was far more terrifying than any sudden outburst of violence. His dark eyes remained fixed on the scattered, handwritten sheet music, calculating the depth of the betrayal unfolding in his own establishment.

From the periphery of the grand piano, a figure moved with quiet, desperate urgency. Romilly Hale, a twenty-five-year-old housemaid, possessed a slender build and a delicate, breathtaking beauty that was usually hidden in the shadows of the estate. Her highly expressive features were contorted with genuine terror, and her dark hair was neatly pinned beneath a white lace maid headband. She wore a fitted black maid dress with a cinched waist, a pristine white apron, and practical flats that made almost no sound on the thick carpet.

Romilly had watched the entire exchange from the edge of the room. She saw the malicious glint in Caspian’s eyes and the dangerous, coiled tension in Evander’s broad shoulders. Her heart hammered wildly against her ribs. In the dangerous world of the Langridge syndicate, a housemaid stepping into a dispute between family members was a fatal error. Yet, seeing the man she secretly, deeply cared for being humiliated and potentially injured in front of his peers overrode every instinct of self-preservation she possessed.

Romilly did not hesitate. She immediately crouched beside Evander, her black dress pooling around her knees on the carpet. She didn't look at Caspian or the towering bodyguards. She focused entirely on the mafia boss.

Her breath trembled visibly as she searched his face, her expressive eyes scanning his sharp jawline for any sign of a concussion. But her primary concern, understanding the soul of the man who played the piano in the dead of night, was his hands. She looked anxiously at his heavily tattooed fingers, terrified that the awkward fall might have damaged the very instruments of his artistry and his power.

She leaned in, treating him with an incredibly careful, profound tenderness that no one else in the room dared to show.

"Sir…" Romilly whispered softly, her American accent cracking with frightened devotion. "Are your fingers hurt?"

Evander’s breath hitched almost imperceptibly. He slowly turned his head, pulling his intense gaze away from the ruined music to look directly at the housemaid crouching beside him. The sheer bravery of her act—defying a senior manager in a room full of dangerous men just to check on his hands—was staggering.

He met her worried, expressive eyes, finding a sudden, fierce sanctuary in their depths. The cold, unyielding armor he wore as the mafia boss softened for a fraction of a second. He did not answer her with words. Instead, he slowly lifted his right hand, the artistic tattoos flexing as he deliberately opened and closed his fist, proving to her that the bones were intact.

Reassured by the movement, Romilly let out a shaky breath. Evander placed his uninjured hand firmly against the polished wood of the grand piano and pushed himself up, rising slowly and methodically to his full, towering height.

The physical pain was minimal, but the profound disrespect burned hotter than fire. As Evander stood, the danger radiating from his masculine frame intensified. He turned his dark, intense gaze back to his cousin, preparing to unleash hell, but Caspian was entirely blinded by his own arrogant ambition, unaware of the lethal boundary he had just crossed.
