Chapter 1

The charity reception held within the private luxury lounge of the Langridge syndicate’s crown jewel was a masterclass in American opulence, bathed in bright, cinematic light. There were no heavy, muddy yellow tints to dull the elegance of the evening; instead, natural, luminous lighting highlighted the rich textures of the room. It was a space designed for intimidation masquerading as philanthropy. Fifty of the city’s most influential investors, syndicate capos, guests, and staff moved like elegant phantoms around the perimeter, the air humming with the crisp sound of American accents and the clinking of fine crystal. It was a night of supposed celebration, yet beneath the polished surface, a venomous power struggle was silently suffocating the room.
At the center of this opulent stage stood Evander Langridge. Thirty-two years old, he possessed the rugged, undeniably masculine presence of a mafia boss. His dark hair was slicked back flawlessly over a sharp, aristocratic jawline dusted with extremely short, neat stubble. Refined, artistic tattoos graced his neck and hands, stark against the crisp white cuffs of his tailored dark three-piece suit. A heavy family signet ring and a luxury wristwatch completed the image of absolute authority. Yet, there was a quiet, artistic soul beneath the ruthless exterior—a soul that found solace in the grand piano situated near the center of the lounge, its polished wood gleaming under the lights.
Tonight, the chief antagonist circling the boss was Caspian Langridge. Forty-two years old, Evander’s older cousin and the manager of this very nightclub, Caspian wore an expensive formal suit that stretched slightly over his frame. A luxury wristwatch glinted on his wrist as he approached his younger cousin. He was flanked by two massive bodyguards—one Black American, one white American—both wearing dark suits and earpieces, projecting a wall of menacing intimidation.
Evander, feeling the exhaustion of the evening’s political maneuvering settling into his bones, turned away from the crowded tables and walked toward the grand piano. He approached the adjustable piano stool, intending to play a single, solitary piece from the handwritten sheet music resting on the stand. It was a moment of vulnerability he rarely allowed himself in public.
As Evander began to lower his weight, preparing to sit, Caspian moved with sudden, brutal violence. His hand shot out, grabbing the edge of the heavy wooden stool. With a vicious, calculated yank, Caspian pulled the stool violently backward, completely removing it from beneath his cousin.
Evander’s center of gravity vanished. He fell hard, crashing heavily onto the thick carpet. As he went down, his left elbow caught the edge of the delicate wooden music stand. The stand buckled under the impact, sending dozens of pages of meticulously handwritten sheet music scattering across the floor like fallen leaves.
The violent action drew the immediate attention of the nearby guests. Conversations died out as dozens of faces turned toward the confrontation. The silence in the lounge was absolute and terrifying.
Caspian stood over his fallen cousin, a cruel, triumphant laugh erupting from his throat. He looked at the surrounding investors, his American accent dripping with mocking condescension as he pointed a finger down at the mafia boss.

"A throne?" Caspian laughed, his voice echoing shrilly across the room. "You can’t even manage a stool."
The humiliation was public, deliberate, and designed to break Evander in front of his syndicate. He remained on the carpet, the danger radiating from his masculine frame.
