Chapter 5

The aftermath of the violent impact hung in the bright, cinematic air of the luxury lounge. The absolute silence was deafening. Caspian lay stunned amidst the ruined glass table, groaning as he struggled to process how a petite maid had just overpowered him so completely. The two professional bodyguards recovered from their initial shock and rushed to Caspian’s side, their hands hovering near their holstered weapons, torn between assisting their employer and surviving the wrath of the mafia boss.
Romilly did not look at the gasping man on the floor, nor did she acknowledge the towering, armed men checking on him. She immediately turned her back on the chaos and focused entirely on the scattered remnants of Evander's private, artistic labor.
She dropped to her knees on the thick carpet, ignoring the dangerous proximity of the broken glass. With shaking hands, she began to gather the scattered pages of handwritten sheet music that Caspian had so callously kicked away. The clean white apron of her maid dress brushed against the floor as she worked with desperate, frantic speed.
She retrieved every single page, treating the paper as if it were priceless artifact. She carefully, methodically smoothed the creased edges and flattened the torn corners, her delicate fingers trembling violently from the adrenaline coursing through her veins.
Once she had collected the music, she stood up and walked back to the grand piano. She carefully settled the pages back onto the buckled wooden stand, arranging them in their proper order.
Only then did she turn back to Evander.
She stepped intimately close to him, completely invading the personal space of the terrifying mafia boss in front of his entire syndicate. Her expressive eyes checked his face with profound, worried intensity. She was visibly frightened, her chest rising and falling rapidly, but she did not step away. She sought reassurance that he was truly uninjured, that her violent intervention had served its purpose.
Evander did not pull away. He allowed her to scrutinize him, the warmth of her presence grounding him in the chaotic, violent scene. He looked down at her neatly pinned hair and the white lace headband, his chest tightening with a profound, unspoken affection. She had just risked her life to protect his dignity and his art.

The fifty guests remained entirely frozen, paralyzed by the internal political hierarchy. To intervene was to choose a side in a war that had just violently erupted. Evander Langridge remained perfectly still, his jaw clenched so tightly the muscles ticked beneath his extremely short stubble.
He slowly brought his tattooed hand up, adjusting the cuffs of his tailored dark suit. He didn't yell. His deep, measured presence demanded absolute authority from everyone in the room. He looked at the housemaid, his dark eyes burning with an intense, quiet devotion that he no longer tried to hide, communicating a silent promise of absolute protection before he turned his wrath onto his cousin.
