Chapter 6

The bright, cinematic lighting of the lounge offered no shadows for Caspian to hide in. He was struggling to rise from the debris of the shattered glass table, leaning heavily on the two bodyguards who were hauling him to his feet. His expensive formal suit was covered in champagne, crushed ice, and tiny shards of crystal. The arrogant, mocking triumph that had fueled him moments ago had vanished entirely, replaced by the humiliating realization of his defeat.

Evander Langridge calmly reached up with his tattooed hands and straightened the lapels of his tailored dark jacket, brushing away an invisible speck of dust. The movement was agonizingly deliberate, a physical manifestation of his complete, terrifying control over the situation.

As he adjusted his jacket, every single guest in the crowded lounge turned toward him. The fifty investors, capos, and staff members knew the reputation of the man standing by the piano. They knew that Evander’s quietest moments were often the prelude to his most profound violence.

Evander slowly turned his head, pulling his gaze away from Romilly. He looked directly at the older cousin who had just attempted a public coup. His dark eyes were completely pitch black, stripped of all humanity or familial warmth.

He didn't raise his voice. His deep, measured American accent sliced through the ringing silence of the room, carrying a lethal, apocalyptic calm that resonated in the bones of every person present.

"Romilly… he’s no longer family," Evander stated.

The declaration dropped like a guillotine blade. In the mafia underworld, to be stripped of the family name and protection by the sitting boss was a death sentence. It meant Caspian was now a civilian, an enemy of the syndicate, and entirely fair game for anyone looking to curry favor with Evander.

Caspian froze. He stopped struggling to rise, hanging limply in the grip of his two bodyguards. The color completely drained from his face, leaving his skin a sickly, terrified pale. He looked at Evander, realizing that the political maneuver he thought would elevate him had just signed his execution order.

"Evander, wait!" Caspian gasped, his voice cracking with sudden, overwhelming panic. "It was a joke! A misunderstanding! You can't do this!"

Evander did not blink. He did not acknowledge the frantic pleas. He simply stared at the man who was now a ghost in his presence.

The two bodyguards—the Black American and the white American—exchanged a quick, terrified glance. They were mercenaries, paid to protect the nightclub manager, but they were surrounded by dozens of heavily armed members of the Langridge syndicate. They realized instantly that their employer was a dead man, and their loyalty was suddenly a fatal liability.

Slowly, deliberately, both bodyguards released Caspian's arms. They stepped backward, abandoning the nightclub manager and raising their hands in a gesture of absolute surrender to the boss.

Romilly remained intimately close beside Evander. She did not shrink back from the danger. She reached out, her small, trembling fingers gently flattening the last torn corner of his sheet music on the piano stand. She stood by his side, an anchor of quiet grace as the crowded lounge fell into a heavy, terrifying silence.
