Chapter 9

The morning sun cast a bright, cinematic light over the shattered glass and scarred marble of the West estate. The air still smelled faintly of cordite and smoke, a lingering ghost of the violence that had claimed the night. But inside the grand salon, where the chaos had first been ignited, a strange, profound peace had settled. The velvet sofas were righted, the debris swept away, and the fortress stood unbowed.
Declan stood by the tall, repaired windows of his private study, gazing out over the sprawling, manicured grounds. He had changed into a fresh, immaculate dark three-piece suit, his powerful shoulders carrying the weight of his newly solidified empire. The extremely short stubble on his jawline perfectly framed his cold, observant eyes as he listened to Marcus’s final casualty report.
"Are the remaining Kerr territories completely under our control, Marcus?" Declan asked, not turning away from the glass.
"Yes, Boss," Marcus grunted, shifting his weight. "The capos surrendered at dawn. The entire western seaboard is yours now. And Vivian... the commission took her. They want to make an example out of her for her father's unsanctioned attack."
"Do you believe they will show her any mercy after she targeted my family?" Declan inquired, his deep voice dropping to a terrifying, satisfied rumble.
"Not a chance in hell, sir," Marcus replied grimly.
As Marcus left, the heavy oak door of the study opened again. Elena stepped inside, and Declan’s breath hitched slightly in his chest. She was no longer wearing the fitted black maid dress with the white apron. Instead, she wore a beautifully tailored, emerald-green silk blouse and dark trousers, clothes Declan had personally ordered for her before the sun rose. The tailored silk draped elegantly, comfortably accommodating her small pregnancy bump without needing to hide it.
"Did you sleep at all, Elena?" Declan asked, closing the distance between them, his cold eyes warming instantly at the sight of her elegant transformation.
"A little," Elena answered softly. "Wren is awake. She is asking for you."
"Do you believe the savior of the West family should ever wear a maid's uniform again?" Declan asked, a faint, almost imperceptible smile touching his lips as he offered her his tattooed arm.
Elena looked down at his offered arm, the artistic, refined tattoos on his hand stark against the crisp white cuff of his shirt. She had crossed a threshold last night, stepping out of the shadows and into the blinding light of the mafia king's inner circle. The transition was terrifying, yet looking into his movie-star handsome face, she felt a profound sense of rightness.
"What happens now, Declan?" Elena asked softly, taking his hand, her fingers resting gently against his skin.
"Shall we go see my daughter, and then rebuild our family?" Declan asked, leading her out of the study and into the bright, airy corridors of the estate.
They walked together toward the family dining room, a smaller, more intimate space bathed in soft elegant warmth. Wren was already sitting at the table, swinging her legs in her red velvet Christmas dress, happily eating a plate of pancakes.
"Daddy! Elena!" Wren cheered, her rosy cheeks glowing with happiness as they entered the room.
"Do you think she has room for actual food, or is she entirely made of sugar now?" Declan asked, his deep voice filled with a warm, genuine amusement that had been absent from the house for years.
He sat down beside his daughter, while Elena took the chair on her other side. It was a picture of domestic tranquility, a stark contrast to the blood that had been spilled on the marble floors just hours before.
As the morning progressed, the heavy machinery of the mafia syndicate began to churn outside the walls, dealing with the fallout of the Kerr family's destruction. Capos arrived for meetings, ledgers were balanced, and territories were divided. But Declan remained in the private wing, prioritizing the fragile peace he had finally secured.
Later that afternoon, Declan and Elena walked together through the pristine rose gardens. The clean whites and gentle golden highlights of the sun caught the edges of the blooming flowers.
"Will you be able to handle this life, Elena?" Declan asked, stopping near a marble fountain. His tone was serious, his cold, observant eyes searching her face. "Will the violence of my world chase away the gentleness in yours?"
"Do you think I am so easily broken?" Elena replied, a fierce spark in her expressive eyes. "I stood up to Vivian. I stood in a room while bullets hit the walls. I am not fragile, Declan."
"Are you certain you want to stand beside a man who solves his problems with a gun?" Declan asked, stepping closer, his hands gently resting on her waist.
May you like
"Are you certain you want a woman who will constantly question you?" Elena countered, a small, genuine smile playing on her lips.
Declan’s angular jaw relaxed, a low, rumbling chuckle escaping his chest. It was a rare, beautiful sound. "Would I have it any other way?"
