Chapter 2

The ambient noise of the grand salon—the clinking of crystal, the low hum of dangerous men discussing millions of dollars, the soft holiday music playing in the background—felt suffocating to Elena. She navigated the space near the fireplace, her flat shoes making absolutely no sound against the marble floor. Her heart hammered a frantic rhythm against her ribs. Every time her gaze accidentally brushed past Vivian Kerr, a fresh wave of cold terror washed over her.
Elena had intended to tell Declan the truth tonight, after the guests had departed. She had carried the secret of their brief, passionate encounter for months, terrified of the consequences. But Vivian, ever watchful and cunning, had discovered the pregnancy earlier that afternoon. The fiancée had cornered Elena in the laundry room, threatening her with immediate eviction and the destruction of her family if she breathed a word to the mafia boss.
"Elena, straighten your apron," hissed Mrs. Gable, the head housekeeper, walking past the fireplace. "Miss Kerr is watching. She will have you thrown out into the snow if you look like a mess for the background of the photos."
"I... I am trying, Mrs. Gable," Elena whispered, her voice cracking as she placed a trembling hand over her stomach.
"You have to survive tonight, child," the older woman pleaded, giving her a gentle, sympathetic look, completely unaware of the true source of the maid's distress. "Just keep your head down."
Elena took a shuddering breath, trying to smooth out the creases in her black uniform.
Wren, standing by the fireplace in her red velvet dress, watched Elena struggle. The six-year-old girl adored the gentle housemaid, viewing her as the only source of genuine warmth in the cold, massive estate. Earlier that day, hiding behind a tapestry, Wren had overheard Vivian threatening Elena. The little girl had learned about the baby, but her innocent mind hadn't grasped the dark necessity of the secrecy.
"Are you okay, Mommy?" Wren asked softly, looking up at Elena. The child affectionately called her 'Mommy', a habit that infuriated Vivian but warmed Elena's broken heart.
"I'm fine, sweetie," Elena replied, forcing a small, tired smile, though her expressive eyes were wide with fear.
Suddenly, the scent of expensive perfume washed over them. Vivian Kerr glided into the immediate, bright circle of the fireplace, completely bypassing the capos and politicians. She held a thick, stiff, black waist belt in her manicured hands.
Elena froze, her hands hovering above her rumpled apron. She didn't dare look up.
Vivian didn't speak initially. She moved with vicious, calculated speed. She stepped directly beside Elena, entirely ignoring the six-year-old girl standing nearby. With a swift, aggressive motion, Vivian wrapped the stiff waist belt around Elena’s abdomen, positioning it directly over the small pregnancy bump, preparing to cinch it tight enough to painfully flatten the evidence.
Elena gasped, stumbling backward slightly as the invasive, restrictive movement startled her. Her delicate fingers tightened desperately against the rumpled fabric of her white apron, trying to protect the life growing inside her.
With a triumphant, theatrical flourish, Vivian grabbed the buckle, preparing to pull it tight. She looked directly at Elena, her polished public smile twisting into a small, commanding, and utterly cruel smirk.
Before Vivian could tighten the belt and crush the breath from the pregnant maid, a small, alarmed voice broke the tension.
Wren, clutching her small cloth doll tightly against her chest, stepped forward. The little girl looked earnestly at Vivian, her young face filled with absolute, innocent concern.

"Auntie, you’ll squish my baby sister!" Wren cried out, her voice pitching just loud enough to cut through the ambient noise of the immediate area.
The child’s innocent declaration hung in the air, a stark contrast to the surrounding conversations about real estate and political maneuvering. The words fell into the opulent salon like a lit match into a powder keg.
