Chapter 3

The immediate vicinity froze. The absolute, terrifying tension radiating from the revelation infected the room instantly. Like a ripple across a dark pond, the shockwave spread outward. Every single guest at the nearby velvet sofas stopped talking. Dozens of powerful men and women turned their heads in unison, their attention snapping entirely toward the little girl, the housemaid, and the mafia boss's fiancée.

The sheer, innocent certainty in Wren’s voice stripped away every layer of sophisticated deniability. Vivian Kerr had not merely been adjusting a uniform; she had been caught attempting to physically conceal the boss's unborn child.

Vivian stopped pulling the belt. Her polished smile vanished for a fraction of a second, collapsing into a grimace of pure, unadulterated panic. The stiff leather trembled slightly in her hands. She took a sharp, shallow breath, realizing her perfect plan had just been detonated by the very child she was trying to manipulate.

With visible, agonizing effort, Vivian forced the corners of her mouth back up. She glanced frantically toward the center of the room. Declan had been speaking with a senator, but he had already turned away from the nearby guests, his cold eyes locking onto the scene by the fireplace.

Vivian looked back at Elena, a brittle, desperate smile plastered across her face, attempting to project the image of a reasonable aristocrat managing a household detail.

"It must disappear before the photos," Vivian hissed under her breath, her voice dripping with a condescending, dismissive sweetness, tightening her grip on the belt one last time in a desperate bid for control.

The lie hung in the bright, luminous air, heavy and desperate.

Before Vivian could engage the buckle, a massive, immovable force intercepted her.

Declan West moved with terrifying, predatory speed. He stepped directly beside Elena, his broad shoulders dominating the space, casting a long shadow in the golden light. He didn't look at Vivian immediately.

With a movement that was incredibly firm yet remarkably controlled, Declan reached out and grabbed Vivian’s pulling hand, stopping her dead in her tracks.

The physical shift in the salon was absolute. By physically stopping his fiancée, Declan had drawn a line in the sand. Every guest in the room fell utterly silent, holding their breath, turning entirely toward the towering mafia boss.

Declan slowly released Vivian's hand. He did not yell. He did not draw a weapon. He turned his head and looked directly at Elena.

He assessed the terrified young woman standing beside him. He took in the deep creases in her uniform, the sheer terror radiating from her delicate frame, and the small, undeniable curve of her abdomen beneath the rumpled apron.

The quiet, unspoken mutual affection that had existed between them—a fragile, dangerous secret hidden in plain sight—ignited instantly in the space between them. Declan held her gaze. The sheer masculine power radiating from his angular jaw was suffocating. He allowed a natural, agonizing pause to stretch between them, letting the weight of his unblinking stare demand the absolute truth.

"Elena," Declan said, quietly, with a measured pause that echoed powerfully across the polished marble floors.

He didn't ask about the belt. He didn't ask about the photos. He bypassed the petty household politics entirely and targeted the only truth that mattered.

"My child?" Declan asked.

The question was a lethal inquiry, a surgical strike that laid the absolute ruin of the household bare for everyone to see.

Elena met Declan’s gaze. She found an anchor of absolute safety in his unblinking stare. She didn't need to defend herself; the truth was already spoken. Her lower lip trembled slightly, a raw display of vulnerability, before she took a deep, shuddering breath, steadying her breathing against the overwhelming terror of the moment.
