Chapter 4

The silence in the opulent salon was a physical weight, pressing down on the chests of the elite guests who dared not draw a breath. The warm golden light from the crystal chandeliers suddenly felt incredibly harsh and exposing, stripping away the glamorous facade of the Christmas Eve reception.
Elena looked up at the terrifying mafia boss, laying her absolute ruin bare for him to see.
"Yes," Elena whispered, the single word falling into the silent room like an executioner's blade. She didn't stop there. The protective fire for her unborn child overrode her fear of the woman in the ivory gown. "Vivian threatened us both."
The collective gasp from the surrounding velvet sofas was audible. The psychological torture Vivian had just inflicted upon a vulnerable pregnant woman was so monstrous, so completely devoid of humanity, that even the mafia capos looked away in disgust.
Declan’s broad shoulders went completely rigid. The artistic tattoos on his hands flexed as his fingers curled into fists. He stared at the housemaid, the horrific reality of his fiancée's cruelty locking into his mind with terrifying precision.
Vivian’s eyes briefly avoided Declan. The color vanished entirely from her fair skin, turning it the shade of ash. Her emerald earrings trembled as a subtle, uncontrollable shake took over her body. But instead of begging for mercy, she lifted her chin slightly, grasping at the last shreds of her aristocratic entitlement.
Vivian’s careful smile hardened into a vicious, calculated line. She looked directly at Declan, choosing to double down, speaking as though she were protecting the syndicate's honor rather than attempting a forced miscarriage.
"A maid cannot carry your heir," Vivian stated, her voice cold and unyielding.
The admission sealed her fate.
Declan moved with incredibly gentle, deliberate care. He reached out and lifted the loose, stiff waist belt entirely away from Elena's abdomen. He didn't throw it. He turned and placed the restrictive belt carefully over the back of a nearby velvet chair, removing the weapon of concealment entirely.
Wren, sensing the sudden shift in the atmosphere and the disappearance of the threat, stepped closer. The six-year-old girl took Elena’s trembling hand, her small fingers wrapping securely around the maid's, seeking comfort and offering her own.
Elena’s shoulders eased slightly, a fraction of the crushing tension leaving her body as she realized the mafia boss was not going to strike her down.
Declan shifted his stance. He remained deliberately positioned between Vivian and Elena, creating an impenetrable wall of dark wool and muscle to shield the housemaid and his daughter.
He slowly raised his cold, unwavering gaze toward Vivian. His sharply defined angular jaw tightened slightly, the muscles ticking beneath his neat stubble. He held the stare, a physical, suffocating weight that pressed down on his fiancée.
Vivian’s smile disappeared completely. She looked down at the ivory satin of her gown, realizing she was entirely trapped. The sequence ended in profound, terrifying silence.
"Are all of you waiting for a family portrait, or have you lost the holiday spirit?" Declan asked the crowd, his deep voice carrying a cold, dismissive edge.
The spell broke. The elite guests scrambled for the exits, eager to escape the unpredictable wrath of the mafia boss. Heels clicked frantically against the cream marble floor as they hurried out, leaving their untouched champagne glasses behind. Within minutes, the vast, luxurious room was entirely empty of civilians, leaving only a few trusted guards, Declan, Elena, Wren, and the trapped fiancée.
"Declan, darling, please," Vivian stammered, reaching out across the space between them, her manicured fingers shaking. "The girl is exaggerating! It was a practical necessity! You cannot have a bastard child running around the estate! She is trying to manipulate you! She wants your wealth for herself!"
Declan did not look at Vivian. He turned his head slightly, his dark, slicked-back hair catching the light, and looked down at Elena. The beautiful housemaid was shaking violently, her free hand resting protectively over her small bump as she succumbed to the overwhelming exhaustion and terror that had plagued her all day.
"Silas," Declan commanded softly, not taking his eyes off Elena.
The senior capo immediately stepped forward from the shadows of the marble columns. "Yes, Boss."

"Will you escort Wren to the nursery?" Declan asked, his voice softening just a fraction for his daughter. "Stay on the door until I relieve you."
"Right away, sir," Silas nodded. He gently took Wren's hand, leading the confused little girl out of the heavy mahogany doors, sealing them inside the salon.
