Chapter 8

The grand front doors of the West estate blew inward with a thunderous crash, splintering the heavy oak into a thousand jagged pieces. The frigid winter air howled into the foyer, carrying with it the chaotic, blinding flashes of muzzle fire. The Kerr family had breached the threshold.

Declan didn't hesitate. "Fire!" he roared.

The foyer erupted into a deafening, blinding storm of violence. Declan raised his suppressed weapon, his broad shoulders absorbing the recoil with effortless, masculine control. He moved with lethal precision, dropping two heavily armed Kerr enforcers before they even fully crossed the broken doorway. The cinematic, warm lighting of the chandeliers was violently interrupted by the strobe effect of automatic gunfire.

"Hold the line!" Silas screamed from behind a shattered cream marble column, laying down suppressing fire that chewed through the invading forces.

The Kerr family had brought numbers, but they had severely underestimated the tactical superiority and absolute loyalty of Declan's men. Every time a wave of attackers tried to push into the grand salon, they were met with a disciplined, devastating wall of lead.

Declan moved from cover to cover, his tailored dark trousers stained with soot and blood, his naturally slicked-back hair now dusted with plaster. He was a god of war in a bespoke suit and a tactical vest.

Outside, amidst the falling snow and the burning wreckage of the northern gate, an armored SUV violently rammed through the chaos, screeching to a halt just outside the shattered front doors.

Stepping out from behind the reinforced door was Old Man Kerr, Vivian's father. He was surrounded by a wall of shielded guards, his face twisted in desperate rage.

"Declan!" Kerr screamed over the gunfire, holding a megaphone. "Give me my daughter, and we walk away! Keep her, and we burn this house until there is nothing left but ash!"

Declan signaled for his men to cease fire. A tense, fragile silence descended over the ruined foyer, broken only by the groans of the wounded and the crackle of burning evergreens near the entrance.

Declan stepped out from behind a marble column, walking slowly and deliberately into the open doorway. He stood in the falling snow, entirely exposed, yet projecting an aura of absolute, terrifying invincibility. His extremely short stubble was covered in soot, his observant eyes locked onto the rival boss.

"Do you believe you are in a position to negotiate, Kerr?" Declan asked, his deep, controlled voice carrying across the snowy courtyard without the need for a megaphone.

"I have two hundred men outside your walls, West!" Kerr yelled back, though his voice wavered slightly at the sheer audacity of Declan standing in the open. "You are outnumbered!"

"Are they loyal men, Kerr, or are they mercenaries who prefer breathing to dying for a child abuser?" Declan inquired, tilting his head slightly. He raised his left hand, the artistic tattoos stark against the white snow.

Suddenly, the tree line surrounding the estate erupted with brilliant, blinding spotlight beams.

Kerr looked around in sheer terror. Surrounding his entire force, perfectly positioned on the high ground and blocking the only exit road, were dozens of black tactical vehicles. The cavalry hadn't arrived for Kerr; they had arrived for Declan. The allied families, notified of the unprovoked attack on a sitting boss, had mobilized to crush the aggressor.

"Did you think I would face you alone?" Declan asked softly, the words carrying like a death knell. "Your daughter is in a cell because she attempted to murder my unborn child and manipulated my daughter. You are standing in my courtyard because you are a fool. Drop your weapons, or die in the snow."

The Kerr mercenaries didn't need to be told twice. Realizing they were completely surrounded and outgunned, the clatter of rifles hitting the pavement echoed through the cold night air.

Declan turned his back on the defeated army, leaving Silas to handle the prisoners. He walked back into the ruined mansion, his chest heaving, the adrenaline finally beginning to ebb.

He didn't stop to assess the damage. He didn't speak to his cheering men. He walked directly toward the secure interior stairs, moving with singular, desperate purpose. He reached the heavy oak doors of his study.

"Elena," Declan called out, knocking firmly. "It's me. Open the door."

The heavy deadbolt clicked immediately. Elena threw the door open, her beautiful, expressive face pale and streaked with tears. She took one look at his soot-covered, exhausted face and threw herself into his arms.

Declan dropped his weapon, wrapping his arms fiercely around her delicate frame, burying his face in her neck, breathing in her scent. The war was over. The king had defended his castle, and the woman who held his heart was safe in his arms, waiting for the dawn.
