Chapter 4

Bianca did not deny the ring.
Not once I named it.
She sat across from me in the small council room with no jewelry, no phone, no authority left in reach.
“You were too young.”
I stared.
“That’s your opening?”
“You were thirty-one now. Twenty-eight then.”
“Twenty-eight.”
She waved it away.
“You had just inherited everything.”
“I had been running half the organization before Father died.”
“You were impulsive.”
“And so you formed a private council.”
“We formed insurance.”
There.
The word people use when they want power without admitting ambition.
“Where is the ring?”
She said nothing.
I leaned forward.
“Where?”
“Gone.”
I almost smiled.
“You lied about Evelyn for three years. Try harder.”
Her jaw tightened.
“We lost it.”
Interesting.
“We?”
Bianca looked away.
Marcus.
Peter.
Enzo.
Maybe others.
Evelyn had interrupted something larger than one sister’s resentment.
“What happened after she saw you?”
Bianca’s face hardened.
“She accused me of betraying you.”
“She was right.”
“I was protecting you.”
“No.”
I kept my voice low.
“You were protecting your right to decide whether I was allowed to lead alone.”
That landed.
Her eyes filled.
“You don’t understand what happened after Mother died.”
I did.
Bianca was fourteen years older.
She became part sister, part guardian.
She took care of me.
Protected me.
Corrected me.
Eventually she forgot I grew up.
“You thought being older made you permanent authority.”
She looked away.
“What did you plan to do to Evelyn?”
“Send her away.”
“For how long?”
“Until after the council formed.”
“And then?”
Silence.
There was no then.
That was the pattern.
Temporary cruelty creates permanent problems because nobody plans the moment after the lie becomes real.
“How did three days become three years?”
Bianca whispered:
“Because she hid the ring.”
I went still.
Evelyn had taken it.
That was why they never released her.
Without the ring, the council lost its symbol.
Without Evelyn, they could pretend she ran.
May you like
So they kept searching.
For something she had hidden before they locked the bridal suite floor.
