Chapter 10

I gathered every surviving man tied to the old council.

No Evelyn.

Her story was not a performance.

No Ethan.

He was three.

Bianca sat at one end.

Marcus at the other.

Peter came by choice.

Two old captains attended who had supported advisory reform but never knew about captivity.

I placed my father’s photograph on the table.

Not the ring.

The photograph.

Then asked:

“Who still believes Castellano needs structured opposition to the boss?”

Three hands rose.

Good.

I raised mine too.

That confused them.

“I do.”

Bianca stared.

I continued.

“The last three years prove it.”

Silence.

“If one person’s authority becomes so unquestionable that my sister can borrow my name to hide a woman under my house, then yes. We have a structural problem.”

Marcus almost smiled.

Then I looked at him.

“But the solution is not another unaccountable circle.”

The smile vanished.

We built the new structure that night.

Three rotating advisers.

Chosen for function, not blood.

No permanent family seats.

No secret meetings using my name.

Any unusual instruction could be challenged through a second channel.

No one person controlled staff, security, and access simultaneously.

Bianca laughed bitterly.

“You’re using Father’s idea.”

“Yes.”

That silenced her.

Not her version.

His actual idea.

Advisers.

Not owners.

I looked around the table.

“My father was allowed to be partly right.”

Then at Bianca.

“You were allowed to be partly right.”

Her face changed.

“And still unforgivably wrong.”

That distinction mattered.

I would not pretend centralization was perfect just because my enemies attacked it dishonestly.

That would leave me vulnerable to the next Bianca.

The council they tried to force through cruelty died.

May you like

The concern beneath it survived.

Cleaned of their ownership.
