Chapter 12

I removed Bianca from every position inside the estate.
No household authority.
No staff supervision.
No council access.
No private use of my security.
No contact with Ethan unless I approved it.
She reacted to that last one.
“He loves me.”
“Yes.”
“I’m his aunt.”
“Yes.”
“You can’t erase me.”
“I’m not.”
I paused.
“I’m removing automatic access.”
That distinction mattered.
Marcus lost every Castellano-associated role.
No waterfront command.
No estate access.
No introductions made in my name.
Peter remained retired.
The two uninvolved captains kept their ranks.
Different knowledge.
Different choices.
Different consequences.
No purge.
That surprised everyone.
Good.
Mass punishment would teach people to hide disagreement better.
I wanted the opposite.
Evelyn heard what I had done and asked:
“You didn’t kill them.”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Would that help you sleep?”
She thought.
“No.”
“Then why would I make your captivity about satisfying my anger?”
Her expression changed.
Maybe approval.
Maybe surprise.
I had surprised myself.
Three years earlier, I would have made blood the ending.
Now I understood something.
Death can simplify villains too much.
Living without borrowed power forces people to confront what remains.
Bianca would wake every day as my sister without authority over my life.

Marcus would discover whether men respected him without Castellano access.
That was consequence enough.
