Chapter 17

One year later, Anna vacuumed the bridal suite again.
This time, the floor panel stood open.
Not hidden.
Below it, the old passage had been turned into wine storage, linen shelves, and a small maintenance corridor.
Lights everywhere.
No concealed locks.
No rooms anyone could close from the outside.
Ethan sat near the doorway building a tower from wooden blocks.
Evelyn stood beside the window.
The old veil hung across the back of a chair.
Clean now.
Still torn.
She had refused to restore it.
“I don’t want it pretending nothing happened.”
Fair.
Anna guided the vacuum across the exact seam where everything began.
The machine rolled over it without catching.
Ethan looked disappointed.
“No dress?”
Evelyn smiled.
“No.”
“No hand?”
“No.”
He nodded.
“Boring.”
I looked at her.
She laughed.
“Perfect.”
Yes.
Perfect.
Bianca lived elsewhere now.
We spoke rarely.
She had apologized.
Evelyn had not forgiven her.
Not yet.
Marcus had no Castellano power left.
The advisory structure remained.
People challenged me more often.
Annoying.
Healthy.
And my father’s ring sat locked inside the archive where dead men’s symbols belonged.
Evelyn picked up the veil.
For a moment, I thought she might throw it away.
Instead she folded it.
Then placed it inside a simple wooden box.
“What will you do with it?”
“Keep it.”
“Why?”
She looked toward the floor.
“Because hiding something and keeping something are different.”
That stayed with me.
Three years earlier, everyone around me had hidden truth because they believed secrecy gave them control.
Now nothing in that room was concealed.
Not the passage.
Not the veil.
Not what Bianca did.
Not what I failed to see.
Ethan knocked three times on the open floor panel.
Anna looked down.
“Anyone there?”
He shouted:
“No!”
Then laughed.
So did Evelyn.
I looked at the wooden boards beneath my feet.
For years, I believed the woman I loved had died somewhere beyond my reach.
She had been inside my own house.
The most dangerous lie was never that Evelyn was dead.
It was that I knew my home simply because I ruled it.

Now the panel stayed open.
And nobody had to disappear for Castellano to remain strong.
