Chapter 9

The silence in the dining hall was deafening, a heavy, oppressive blanket that smothered the bright, cinematic atmosphere of the afternoon. Beatrice stood perfectly still, her manicured hands trembling against the fabric of her elegant formal gown. The realization that she was being cast out of the empire she had helped build was a psychological shattering.
"Rafael, you cannot be serious," Beatrice finally choked out, her voice a fragile, pathetic whisper. "Where are we supposed to go? We have no cash, no security details outside of this estate. If you throw us out onto the street, our enemies will slaughter us."
"Your enemies," Rafael corrected her coldly, adjusting the cuffs of his dress shirt, "are no longer my concern. Your five minutes started thirty seconds ago."
He turned his back on her, a gesture of absolute, terrifying dismissal. He looked toward his loyal capos, the men who had watched the entire confrontation and were now forced to choose between the old matriarch and the lethal, reigning king.
"Marcus," Rafael called out, his deep voice cutting through the tension.
The senior capo stepped forward instantly, his face set in a mask of grim determination. "Yes, Boss."
"Escort them to their quarters. Do not allow them to pack any jewelry, any cash, or any family documents," Rafael ordered, his American accent sharp and unyielding. "They leave with the clothes on their backs. Drive them to the city limits. If they attempt to contact any member of this syndicate again, execute them."
"No! Please, Rafael!" Valeria shrieked from the floor, scrambling desperately on her hands and knees through the ruined cake. "I have a son! You can't put Julian out on the street!"
Rafael didn't even turn around to look at her. "Julian will be delivered to his father's family in Chicago. He will be raised away from your poison. You are leaving alone."
"You are a monster!" Beatrice screamed, completely abandoning her aristocratic composure as two massive, heavily armed bodyguards grabbed her roughly by the arms.
"I am exactly what you made me, Mother," Rafael replied softly, staring out the massive windows at the bright blue sky.
The bodyguards hauled the screaming, thrashing women out of the dining hall. Their desperate pleas and hysterical threats echoed down the long, marble corridors of the estate, fading slowly until the heavy front doors slammed shut, sealing their exile.
Rafael let out a slow, controlled breath. The tension bled from his broad, muscular shoulders. He turned his attention back to his daughter, who was standing quietly near the wall, her small hand clutching the heavy gold signet ring.
"Are they gone, Daddy?" Amelia asked, her bright eyes looking up at him.
May you like
"They are gone forever, sweetheart," Rafael promised, walking over and lifting her effortlessly into his arms. "Nobody is ever going to tell you that you are weak again. You are the strongest person I know."
Amelia smiled, wrapping her arms around his neck. The domestic treason had been eradicated from his home, but Rafael’s sharp, calculating mind was already moving to the next battlefield.
