Chapter 3

The immediate aftermath of the assault was a profound, suffocating silence. The bright, vivid lighting illuminated the tears streaming down Amelia's rosy cheeks as she clutched her knee on the floor. The White American relatives and capos froze, their wine glasses suspended in mid-air, entirely paralyzed by the sheer, psychopathic audacity of Valeria's actions.
At the head of the long mahogany table, Rafael Castellano had been seated the entire time.
He did not gasp. He did not shout. The transition from a sophisticated host to an absolute, terrifying predator was instantaneous and silent.
Rafael slowly rose from his chair.
The deeply masculine, overwhelmingly intimidating presence of the Mafia boss seemed to suck the oxygen out of the room. The dark fabric of his tailored three-piece suit shifted as he stepped away from the table. He did not run toward his sister; he walked with a slow, deliberate, and lethal grace. His polished leather shoes made heavy, echoing sounds against the floor.
Valeria’s smirk faltered for a fraction of a second as she watched her brother approach, but she quickly masked her fear with arrogant defiance.
Rafael bypassed Valeria entirely, acting as if she did not even exist. He dropped to his knees on the hard floor right beside his weeping daughter. His massive, powerful frame completely shielded the five-year-old from the rest of the room.
"Daddy," Amelia sobbed, burying her face into the crisp white fabric of his dress shirt.
"I've got you, my beautiful girl," Rafael murmured. His voice was a low, steady rumble of absolute, protective love, completely devoid of the violence that was currently boiling in his veins.
He gently took the medical brace that Valeria had carelessly dropped onto the floor. With profound, heartbreaking tenderness, Rafael wrapped his large hands around Amelia's leg and securely placed the brace back around her limb, locking the straps into place with clinical precision.
"Does it hurt?" Rafael asked softly, brushing a stray tear from her fair cheek.
"It hurts, Daddy," Amelia whimpered, her tiny hands gripping the lapels of his dark suit. She looked up at him, her innocent eyes filled with a terror that went far deeper than physical pain. She pulled his ear down toward her mouth, her voice dropping into a frightened, fragile whisper.

“Daddy… Grandma says Julian gets everything.”
The words struck Rafael like a physical blow. The air in his lungs turned to ice. He slowly turned his head, his cold, sharp eyes looking up from the floor. He looked past Valeria, past the shocked guests, and locked his gaze directly onto his mother, Beatrice, who was sitting perfectly still at the table. The true architect of the treason had just been revealed.
