Chapter 6

The ringing silence in the dining hall was punctuated only by Valeria’s ragged, sobbing gasps as she struggled to push herself up from the ruined cake and shattered crystal. The bright, flawless daylight pouring through the windows offered no shadows for the traitors to hide within. The fair, rosy skin of the assembled guests had turned a uniform, sickly pale.
Beatrice Castellano did not flinch. Despite the brutal physical dismantling of her daughter, the sixty-seven-year-old matriarch remained seated at the table. Her posture was rigid, her expression a mask of arrogant defiance. She had ruled the shadows of this family for decades alongside her late husband, and she refused to yield to her son.
"You are throwing a temper tantrum, Rafael," Beatrice said, her American accent dripping with condescension. She pointed a manicured finger toward the succession papers resting on the mahogany table, refusing to back down an inch.
"A temper tantrum," Rafael repeated, his voice a low, vibrating hum of pure, concentrated danger.
"You are letting your emotions dictate business," Beatrice argued, standing up from her chair to meet his towering presence. "That document secures the future of the Castellano syndicate. Julian is healthy. He is strong. He will be molded into a leader."
"He is a coward," Rafael stated flatly, not even glancing at the nine-year-old hiding under the chair. "And he is being raised by a snake."
"He is the only viable option!" Beatrice shouted, her composure finally cracking under his relentless, intimidating stare.
Beatrice stepped forward, tapping the legal documents aggressively with her finger.
“Sign,” Beatrice commanded, attempting to wield her cold authority like a weapon. “The family needs a stronger heir. If you refuse to sign this today, the capos will force a vote of no confidence. You will be removed from the head of this table by the end of the week. You have no choice, Rafael.”
"You believe," Rafael murmured, taking a slow, deliberate step toward her, "that a piece of paper... and the whispers of a few disloyal men... can strip me of my throne."
"It is the law of the family!" Beatrice insisted, her fair face flushing a dark, angry crimson. "I built this empire with your father! I will not watch you destroy it out of pity for a crippled girl! Sign the papers, Rafael, or you will lose everything!"

Rafael stopped just inches from the table. He looked down at the documents, then up at his mother. The terrifying, cold-blooded executioner completely unmasked himself.
"The law of the family," Rafael whispered, the controlled pauses in his speech highlighting his absolute, lethal resolve, "is whatever I say it is."
