Chapter 7

Caleb arrived furious.
Not frightened.
Men like him mistake age for immunity until the room stops agreeing.
He walked into my council room and ignored Danielle completely.
“Release Vanessa.”
I sat at the head of the table.
“No.”
His face hardened.
“She is your fiancée.”
“Not anymore.”
For the first time, he looked at her.
Vanessa looked back.
Something passed between them.
Father and daughter.
Not affection.
Blame.
Caleb turned to me.
“You’re destroying three years over a maid’s story.”
Danielle’s face changed.
I noticed.
“So you knew who Relle was.”
He froze.
Small mistake.
Useful.
“I know Danielle has a sister.”
“Missing sister.”
He shrugged.
“People disappear.”
Amara hugged her rabbit tighter.
I stared at him.
“Not from my house.”
Caleb smiled faintly.
“You’re still young enough to believe everything in your house belongs to you.”
I almost laughed.
“There he is.”
“What?”
“The man my father removed.”
His eyes sharpened.
I placed the phone on the table.
Then played Vanessa’s first line.
You said he’d never find out who my father is.
Caleb did not move.
Vanessa closed her eyes.
I stopped the recording.
“You built my engagement.”
He folded his hands.
“I introduced two people.”
“You planted your daughter beside me.”
“She loved you.”
Vanessa looked at him.
That hurt her.
Good.
Caleb continued.
“Maybe that part surprised me.”
I leaned forward.
“And Relle?”
His expression hardened.
“She overheard family business.”
“So you imprisoned her.”
“I contained a threat.”
Danielle recoiled.
There was the vocabulary.
A mother becomes a threat.
Kidnapping becomes containment.
A lie becomes family strategy.

I had heard men like Caleb speak this language my entire life.
I had never hated it more.
