Chapter 1

I placed the sapphire ring beside the brass key and watched Vanessa look at both as if I had laid two loaded weapons on the table.
“Preserve every camera recording from this house. Nobody leaves.”
My security chief raised his tablet immediately. Two guards closed the fitting-room doors while Danielle pulled Amara against her side.
Vanessa stared at me.
“Julian, this is insane.”
I looked at the fireplace.
At the rabbit she had tried to destroy.
Then at her.
“You tried to burn a child’s toy because something fell out of it.”
“I panicked.”
“Why?”
No answer.
Amara was crying quietly now. She kept looking at the ring in my hand.
“That’s Mommy’s.”
Vanessa snapped, “Children confuse things.”
Danielle stepped forward.
“No.”
Her voice shook, but she held my gaze.
“Relle wore that ring every day for eight years.”
I turned the sapphire slowly.
There was a tiny diagonal chip in the stone.
Danielle pointed.
“She dropped it on our mother’s kitchen floor. That mark never came out.”
Vanessa’s face lost color.
I looked at her.
“Where did you get it?”
“A dealer.”
“Name.”
Silence.
“Receipt.”
Nothing.
I picked up the brass key.
Danielle stared at the engraving again.
H-17.
“She had that too,” she whispered. “The night she disappeared.”
“When?”
“Fourteen months ago.”
My security chief suddenly looked up from his tablet.
“What?”
We turned.
He had gone pale.
“What did you find?”
He swallowed.
“Fourteen months ago, Relle Carter entered this house through the east service entrance.”
Danielle stopped breathing.
“And?”
He looked at me.
“There’s no recording of her leaving.”
Vanessa closed her eyes.
That was the moment the fitting stopped being about a stolen ring.

A missing woman had entered my house fourteen months ago.
And somehow everyone around me had forgotten to tell me she never came back out.
