Chapter 14

I removed Caleb from every Hale channel before sunset.
No crews.
No family meetings.
No access through older captains.
No messages delivered on his behalf.
Men who had answered his calls for thirty years stopped answering.
That was the punishment he understood.
Vanessa lost every privilege attached to me immediately.
The wedding disappeared.
The fitting disappeared.
Her rooms were cleared by staff she did not control.
She asked to speak with me alone.
I refused.
Not because I feared her.
Because privacy had protected enough lies already.
She stood across from me with Relle present.
“I loved you.”
I believed her.
That was the problem.
Love does not erase what someone chooses to do while feeling it.
“You helped imprison her.”
“My father said she would destroy us.”
“She had a recording.”
“She could have exposed everything.”
I looked at her.
“That is what truth does.”
Vanessa cried.
“You would have left me.”
“Yes.”
She flinched.
There it was.
The motive beneath all the grand family strategy.
Fear of losing me.
She had decided Relle should lose fourteen months so Vanessa would not lose a marriage.
Relle spoke quietly.
“You could have lost Julian.”
Vanessa looked at her.
“You decided I should lose Amara instead.”
No one spoke.
May you like
Vanessa finally lowered her eyes.
For the first time, she had no defense left that did not sound exactly as ugly as the truth.
