Chapter 12

Caleb lost his confidence when Relle walked into the council room.

That was satisfying.

Not because I enjoyed fear.

Because for fourteen months he had built power on her absence.

Now the absence was over.

He looked at her.

“You should have taken the offer.”

Relle stared.

“What offer?”

“A new life. Money. Distance.”

Danielle recoiled.

Relle laughed.

“You mean disappearance with better furniture.”

Caleb shrugged.

“You had options.”

There it was.

Blame the captive for refusing the prettier cage.

I looked around the table.

Six senior captains.

Men Caleb once considered his natural audience.

No one defended him.

Good.

I played the recordings.

Not all nineteen minutes.

Enough.

Vanessa calling him father.

Caleb explaining that my marriage would reopen doors.

His statement about what happened if I refused to listen.

Then I stopped.

One older captain spoke.

“You used Julian’s engagement to build your return.”

Caleb smiled.

“I preserved the Hale line.”

I almost laughed.

“I am the Hale line.”

“You’re one man.”

“And Vanessa?”

He looked at her.

“My daughter.”

Not my fiancée.

Not a woman.

A piece on a board.

Vanessa heard it too.

She looked away.

I leaned forward.

“You wanted her child to combine our branches.”

Caleb did not deny it.

“And if I became inconvenient?”

Silence.

That answer was enough.

The room changed.

Not because they suddenly loved me.

Because Caleb had crossed the rule old Mafia men pretend matters most.

He had turned blood into a weapon against blood.

Then Relle spoke.

“You missed one thing.”

Caleb looked at her.

“You thought Julian needed your family to survive.”

May you like

She glanced at me.

“But your whole plan collapsed because a three-year-old recognized her mother’s ring.”
