Chapter 4

The key opened a narrow brass door behind the old wine racks.
Compartment H-17 was barely large enough for a person to crouch inside.
Dust covered everything except one metal case pushed against the back wall.
Danielle started crying when she saw it.
“What?”
She pointed at the cloth tied around the handle.
Purple.
Cheap cotton.
“Relle’s scarf.”
I unlocked the case.
Inside was an old phone, a charger, three photographs, and an envelope addressed to Danielle.
No legal papers.
No dramatic ledger.
Just one woman leaving enough truth behind that someone might eventually believe her.
Danielle opened the envelope with shaking hands.
If I disappear, don’t believe I ran.
That was the first line.
Amara moved closer to her.
Danielle kept reading silently.
Then she looked at me.
“She wrote your name.”
My jaw tightened.
“What does it say?”
She handed me the page.
Julian Hale doesn’t know what’s happening in his own house.
Not yet.
Below it:
Vanessa is not who he thinks she is.
My eyes moved toward the cellar entrance.
Vanessa was upstairs under guard.
I continued.
If she marries him, Caleb gets what he has wanted since Julian’s father died.
My breathing slowed.
The phone turned on after charging.
One audio file.
Nineteen minutes.
Recorded the night Relle disappeared.
I pressed play.
Vanessa’s voice came first.
“You said he’d never find out who my father is.”
Then Caleb answered.
“He won’t unless you panic.”
Nobody in the cellar moved.
Danielle stared at me.
I replayed the line.
Who my father is.
I had known Vanessa for three years.
Met her mother.
Seen photographs of the man I had been told died before she turned ten.
May you like
Apparently that man was not her father.
Caleb Hale was.
