Chapter 17

One year later, Danielle brought Amara to the estate for a small family dinner.

Relle came too.

Her choice.

Not mine.

The fitting room had been changed completely.

No wedding mirrors.

No ivory fabric.

No trace of Vanessa.

Amara still carried the old stuffed rabbit.

The seam along its stomach was visible.

Relle had repaired it without trying to make it disappear.

I liked that.

At dinner, Amara climbed onto Danielle’s chair, then immediately moved to Relle’s lap.

Normal.

Possessive.

Happy.

After dessert, she took something from her little bag.

The sapphire ring.

Relle looked surprised.

“You brought that?”

Amara nodded.

“You forgot.”

“I didn’t forget.”

“Then why was it in the box?”

Relle smiled.

“Because I don’t need to wear it every day.”

Amara thought about that.

Then handed it back.

Relle slipped it onto her finger.

For the first time since I had known the object, it looked like jewelry again.

Not evidence.

Not a clue.

Not a trophy.

Just something belonging to the woman who wore it.

The brass key stayed in the box.

No hidden compartment waiting to be opened.

No recording protecting someone’s life.

Before leaving, Amara dropped the rabbit in the hallway.

A year earlier, Vanessa had grabbed that toy and tried to burn it because she was terrified of what might be inside.

This time, Amara simply turned around, picked it up, and kept walking.

No panic.

No secret fell out.

I watched Relle take her daughter’s hand.

For most of my life, I thought powerful families were safe because important people were watched carefully.

Relle taught me how wrong that was.

The person who exposed the deepest betrayal in my house was not a capo, an adviser, or a bodyguard.

It was a missing mother who hid a key inside a toy—and the three-year-old daughter who remembered exactly who her mother’s ring belonged to.
