Chapter 3

My daughter refused to sleep until I sat beside her bed.
Mira was breathing normally in the bassinet beside us. The physician had checked her twice. Physically, she was safe.
Emotionally, Elena was somewhere else.
“I told you.”
Three words.
Quiet.
Worse than accusation.
I looked at her.
“When?”
“Before Mira was born.”
Memory returned.
Elena had said Camille kept entering the nursery without asking.
I called it excitement.
She said Camille was rearranging baby clothes.
I called it helping.
She said Camille corrected staff when they listened to her.
I told her everyone was tense because of the new baby.
Each time, I thought I was calming conflict.
Instead, I was translating warnings into harmless explanations because the alternative was admitting my wife and daughter were at war inside my own home.
“I was wrong.”
Elena stared at me.
No softening.
Good.
“I thought maybe I was going crazy.”
My chest tightened.
“That was the point.”
Her eyes filled.
Then she told me more.
Camille had been calling her a liar privately for months.
If Elena said she left Mira’s cardigan downstairs, Camille claimed it had always been upstairs.
If Elena remembered a conversation differently, Camille laughed.
If the baby cried after Camille held her, Camille said Elena’s anxiety was upsetting the child.
Every feeling became evidence against Elena.
Then came the sentence that explained the refrigerator.
“Yesterday I told her I was going to tell you everything when you came back.”
I stared.
“What did she say?”
“That no one would believe me after tonight.”
There.
The recording had been planned as the final piece.
Not the beginning.
Camille had spent weeks creating a reputation.
Tonight she wanted footage.
A frightened postpartum mother rushing into a room.
Crying.
Shouting.
Maybe grabbing Camille.
Maybe looking “unstable.”
Then edit away the reason.
I looked at Mira.
Five weeks old.
Already used as leverage in a campaign against her own mother.
Elena whispered:
“Why?”
I did not answer.
Not yet.
Because the phone held another clue.
Several videos were labeled with the same phrase:
HOUSEHOLD REVIEW.

My wife had not only been trying to discredit Elena to me.
She had been preparing to show someone else.
