Chapter 2

There were forty-three recordings.

Not all from that day.

The oldest was six weeks earlier—before Mira was even born.

I sent Elena and the baby upstairs with two guards and our physician. Tessa stayed with them until Elena insisted she return to me.

“She needs to tell you,” Elena said.

Not wants.

Needs.

I listened.

The first recordings looked harmless.

Camille arranging nursery blankets.

Camille checking bottles.

Camille talking into the phone about helping a “difficult new mother.”

Then the language changed.

“Elena keeps imagining things.”

“Elena says people move her belongings.”

“Elena thinks I’m trying to take over.”

“She cries whenever I correct her.”

Each video built the same picture.

My daughter unstable.

Suspicious.

Emotional.

I stared at Tessa.

“Was she?”

“No.”

Immediate.

Good.

Tessa explained that Camille had been moving things herself.

A bottle placed in the nursery became a bottle found in the pantry.

A blanket Elena swore she folded disappeared and returned later.

Mira’s feeding notebook vanished twice.

Then Camille would calmly tell staff Elena had forgotten where she left things.

Small.

Petty.

Effective.

Postpartum exhaustion did the rest.

Elena began doubting herself.

I felt something ugly settle inside my chest.

“Why didn’t anyone tell me?”

Tessa looked ashamed.

“We thought you knew.”

Of course.

My wife had been using my authority as camouflage.

“She said you wanted us to stop upsetting Elena by repeating every little complaint.”

I closed my eyes.

I had said something close to that.

Weeks earlier, during the final days of Elena’s pregnancy, Camille told me my daughter was overwhelmed and the staff kept bringing me minor household problems.

I told her:

Handle the small things. Bring me what matters.

One careless sentence.

Camille turned it into a wall.

I looked at Tessa.

“What mattered enough that you finally ignored her?”

Her eyes went toward the refrigerator.

“This.”

Then she corrected herself.

“No.”

She swallowed.

“What she said before she did it.”

I waited.

Tessa’s voice dropped.

“She said if Elena panicked hard enough on camera, nobody would ever believe her again.”

The baby had not been the target.

Elena’s credibility had.
