Chapter 17

Mira was almost one when Camille’s name returned to the dinner table.
Not because she came back.
Because Elena mentioned her.
“She sent a birthday card.”
I looked up.
“For Mira?”
“Yes.”
“Gift?”
“No.”
Good.
“What did it say?”
Elena smiled faintly.
“Happy birthday. Nothing else.”
That mattered.
No apology attached.
No emotional burden.
No request.
Just recognition.
Elena placed the card in a drawer.
Not displayed.
Not destroyed.
Her choice.
After dinner, Mira crawled across the nursery floor toward Tessa’s phone.
Tessa picked it up before she could chew it.
“Absolutely not.”
Mira laughed.
Then Tessa turned the camera toward us.
“Picture.”
Elena sat beside me.
Mira between us.
No staging.
No hidden purpose.
No one preparing to edit the reaction later.
Just a photograph.
I almost refused out of habit.
Then stopped.
“Fine.”
Tessa took it.
Mira looked away at the last second.
Perfect.
Later I saw the image.
Elena laughing.
Me looking slightly annoyed.
Mira fascinated by something outside the frame.
Real life rarely arranges itself cleanly enough for manipulation.
That is what makes it trustworthy.
Months earlier, Camille positioned a phone because she believed controlling the frame meant controlling the truth.
She almost succeeded.
She filmed only what she wanted people to see.
Until the camera kept running long enough to record her too.
That was the mistake.
Not that she recorded a crime.
That she believed everyone else could be reduced to a story she narrated while remaining outside it herself.
No one gets that privilege forever.
Mira reached toward the phone again.
Tessa moved it away.
Elena laughed.
I looked at my granddaughter.
Alive.
Safe.
Unconcerned with any of us explaining who she was.
The phone had once been used to manufacture fear.
May you like
Now it held one crooked family photograph nobody needed to defend.
That was enough.
