Chapter 12

Camille asked to apologize to Elena.

Elena said no.

Good.

Camille asked again a week later.

No.

Then she stopped asking.

Better.

I moved her out of the main estate.

Not because I wanted her destroyed.

Because the house itself had become part of her control.

She needed to exist somewhere nobody’s dependence defined her.

No staff assigned beyond basic security.

No household authority.

No access to Mira.

No family hosting.

She cried when I told her.

“What am I supposed to do all day?”

There.

The problem.

I looked at her.

“Find out.”

That frightened her more than punishment.

She had organized people for years.

Now she had to organize herself.

Elena stayed.

Obviously.

But something shifted between us too.

She no longer accepted my help automatically.

If I offered to take Mira, she sometimes said no.

If I asked whether she needed rest, she sometimes said:

“I need you to stop asking.”

Fair.

Control can wear concern from any direction.

I was learning.

One afternoon she handed Mira to me voluntarily.

“Ten minutes.”

I smiled.

“Exactly?”

“Yes.”

I took my granddaughter.

She stared at me with the solemn suspicion newborns reserve for unfamiliar faces.

“I’m your grandfather.”

She yawned.

Unimpressed.

Good.

Ten minutes later, Elena returned.

I handed Mira back immediately.

No joke.

No delay.

Trust rebuilds through boring consistency.

Maybe that was the opposite of Camille’s method.

May you like

She created doubt through hundreds of tiny disturbances.

We would rebuild certainty through hundreds of tiny respects.
