Chapter 4

The tension in the brightly lit ballroom escalated into a highly combustible, physical weight. The cinematic lighting offered no shadows for Marcella to hide within. She stood just a few feet away from her brother, her heavy diamond jewelry sparkling as her chest heaved with anxious, defensive breaths.
"She is manipulative, Nico," Marcella hissed, attempting to reclaim her shattered authority in front of the extended crime family. "She uses the memory of that dead woman to control you. You coddle her, and it makes you look weak. I am the matriarch of this family now, and I will not be embarrassed on my wedding day!"
Driven by a toxic cocktail of cornered panic and an irrational belief in her own untouchability, Marcella made the final, fatal mistake of her life. She genuinely believed that because she was the bride, and his sister, she was immune to his wrath.
"Give her to me," Marcella demanded, stepping forward.
She reached her manicured hands out aggressively, aiming to bypass Nico and grab Vivia’s arm to forcefully drag the weeping six-year-old out of the room.
Nico moved with the blinding, explosive speed of a seasoned street enforcer.
Before Marcella’s hands could even come close to his daughter, Nico’s massive hand shot upward. He caught Marcella’s wrist in an iron, inescapable grip, halting her momentum entirely. Her eyes widened in sudden, absolute shock.
With a brutal, effortless motion, Nico violently pulled Vivia safely completely behind him. In the same fluid, devastating transfer of his immense upper-body strength, Nico drew his right hand back.
He delivered one brutal, catastrophic open-handed slap directly across Marcella’s face.
The sound of the impact was explosive, echoing far louder than the strike that had felled the child.
The sheer kinetic force of the blow was absolute. It lifted the thirty-nine-year-old woman completely out of her designer heels. Marcella’s head snapped violently sideways. All the air detonated from her lungs in a wet, ragged gasp.
She staggered backward, entirely out of control, her luxurious wedding gown twisting awkwardly around her legs.
She hurtled backward across the marble floor and crashed heavily into the primary wedding table.
The impact was thunderous. The heavy wooden table shuddered under her weight. Dozens of tall, crystal champagne glasses, arranged in a magnificent pyramid, toppled violently. The glasses crashed down around her, shattering explosively against the table and the marble floor, raining sharp, glittering shards over her pristine white gown.
Marcella collapsed into a pathetic, groaning heap among the broken crystal and spilled champagne. Her cheek was instantly swelling into a grotesque, dark purple bruise.
There was no dialogue.

The overwhelming, brutal reality of the violence silenced every single person in the room. The White American guests pressed themselves flat against the walls, terrified to even draw breath. The live string quartet had completely stopped playing.
Nico stood perfectly still, his tailored dark suit entirely unblemished. His breathing was perfectly controlled. He flexed his right hand, the heavy gold signet ring gleaming under the natural light. He did not look at his sister with anger; he looked at her with the cold, detached calculation of a man assessing a threat that needed to be permanently eradicated.
