Chapter 2

The bright, cinematic colors of the ballroom seemed to sharpen, acting as an unforgiving spotlight on the unfolding confrontation. Marcella closed the distance between herself and her young niece with aggressive, predatory strides. Her luxurious wedding gown swished violently across the polished marble. The surrounding guests, sensing the sudden drop in barometric pressure, subtly backed away, their conversations dying out completely.

"Aunt Marcella, I made this for you," Vivia said, her tiny American accent trembling slightly as she offered the handmade card.

Marcella didn't even look at the card. Her cold, furious eyes raked over the old, slightly tattered formal dress the six-year-old was wearing. The fabric was frayed at the hem, a faded relic of a woman Marcella had despised.

"Who allowed you to leave your room wearing this absolute garbage?" Marcella demanded, her voice a sharp, venomous hiss.

"It's not garbage," Vivia replied, her lower lip quivering, clutching the fabric of the dress tightly in her small hands. "It was Mommy's. She wore it when she was happy. I wanted to wear it today because it's a happy day."

"Your mother was a weak, pathetic outsider who dragged our family name through the mud," Marcella sneered, stepping directly into the child's personal space. Her fair, rosy face twisted into a mask of unadulterated disgust. "And I will not have my perfect wedding day ruined by her ghost."

"Don't say bad things about my mom!" Vivia cried out, stepping backward in her simple flats.

Marcella’s temper, always volatile and deeply rooted in arrogance, flared into physical violence. Without a fraction of a second of hesitation or basic human empathy, the thirty-nine-year-old bride raised her manicured hand.

She violently slapped Vivia across the face beside the wedding table.

The sound of the impact cracked like a gunshot through the silent, brightly lit ballroom.

The sheer force of the blow from the grown woman was devastating. Vivia’s head snapped violently sideways. The six-year-old girl let out a sharp, breathless gasp as she completely lost her balance. She crashed hard onto the cold marble floor, her small body crumbling into a weeping heap as she desperately clutched the old dress against her chest to protect it.

A collective gasp swept through the crowd of White American relatives. Several women covered their mouths in horror, but no one dared to step forward.

Marcella stood towering over the sobbing child, smoothing the front of her pristine wedding gown. She looked down at her niece, smiling with poisonous, vicious contempt.

“That rag belongs in the gutter," Marcella declared, her voice ringing clearly across the paralyzed room, "not in this family.”

Vivia curled into a tight ball on the floor, her fair cheek already swelling with a bright, angry red handprint. She sobbed into the old, tattered fabric, entirely traumatized by the sudden, brutal assault. The cinematic, flawless daylight pouring into the room felt like a grotesque contrast to the dark, sickening reality of the Bellandi family dynamics.

"Get up," Marcella ordered coldly. "Get up and go back to your room before I have the guards drag you there."

But before Marcella could reach down to grab the weeping child, the atmosphere in the ballroom violently, catastrophically shifted.
