Chapter 4

The tension in the brightly lit room was suffocating. Valeria lay weeping softly among the debris of the ruined birthday cake, her luxurious dress smeared with frosting and blood from her split lip. Julian sat trembling in his oversized formal chair, completely traumatized by the sudden explosion of violence. Yet, Beatrice Castellano remained standing at the far end of the table, her finger still pointed accusingly at the succession documents.

"You have lost your mind, Rafael!" Beatrice shouted, her American accent cracking with fury. "You strike your own sister? You lay hands on Castellano blood? I am the matriarch of this family, and I am ordering you to sign that transfer!"

Rafael looked at his mother, his handsome, deeply masculine face carved out of pure, unyielding stone. "You ceased to be the matriarch of this family the second you threatened my daughter. You ceased to be my mother the second you put a target on her back."

"I am saving this empire!" Beatrice roared, her chest heaving under her elegant gown. "If you do not sign those papers, the outer families will turn on you! Half the capos in this very room agree with me! They know the girl is a liability!"

"Let them speak, then," Rafael challenged, his voice dangerously low as he swept his dark gaze across the frozen family members and guards. "If any man in this room believes my daughter is a liability, let him draw his weapon right now."

No one moved. The silence was absolute, a testament to the terrifying, unquestionable authority Rafael wielded. The men in the room looked at the floor, refusing to meet the mafia boss's eyes.

Rafael reached down and picked up the sealed succession folder. He held it up in the bright light, staring at the legal seals and the careful typography designed to steal his daughter's future.

"This is your grand plan," Rafael said softly. "Paper and ink."

With a sudden, violent motion, Rafael tore the thick stack of legal papers cleanly in half. He walked slowly down the length of the long mahogany table, the sound of his polished leather shoes echoing off the walls. He reached Beatrice, holding the shredded documents over her. He opened his hands and dropped the torn papers directly into her lap.

He then turned, walked back to Amelia, and gently took her small hand. He pulled the heavy, solid gold signet ring from his own finger—the ultimate symbol of Castellano power—and pressed it firmly into Amelia’s palm.

Rafael turned his head, his dark eyes locking onto Beatrice. His expression was quiet, completely devoid of emotion, and absolutely lethal.

"You have five minutes to pack your things," Rafael stated.

Beatrice froze, the color completely draining from her fair, rosy cheeks. The shredded papers fluttered to the floor. Valeria, struggling to her knees amidst the cake ruins, went deathly pale, realizing they had just lost everything.
